    Sports Reporter at Metro.co.uk

I've recently set up professional social media accounts on TikTok and Instagram as part of my multimedia training with Anushka Suharu at Metro.co.uk. It's been a lot of fun to learn new skills - and refine some old ones - and I'm delighted with how my third video has gone on TikTok, previewing the Grand Sumo Tournament, which I'm attending tonight at the Royal Albert Hall. I appeared on a 'trending search' for the event on TikTok, with the clip viewed over 36,000 times in less than 48 hours - racking up over 2,300 likes, 77 comments and 245 bookmarks so far. A huge thanks to Anushka for all her support and patience! Can you name Scotland's newest city? In the second edition of B-List Britain, Metro.co.uk's latest Travel series, our writer Ben Aitken explores Dunfermline — a place that gets just 0.04% of the tourists that Edinburgh does. With trademark irreverence, he paints a brilliant picture of: 🏛️ the city's history 👑 its royal connections 🍰 surprisingly excellent desserts and something called the Lorne Sausage Block. 📰 Full story in the comments.

A sunny holiday resort famous for world-class diving and spectacular coral reefs is the surprising host of today's Gaza 'peace summit'. How did that happen? I was instantly interested when I got a pitch about this yesterday from Egypt-based travel writer Tamara Davison. Reporting from South Sinai, she unpacks Sharm El-Sheikh's strange journey from Bedouin fishing village to package holiday destination with political significance. 🕵♀️ Full story in comments.

Party conference season is over at last 😮💨 This year Metro tried something new with our coverage, and I'm thrilled to share the results... Masterminded by Anushka Suharu, Alex Goldsmith and Isobel Frodsham, we took a TikTok-first approach, capturing the brilliant and bizarre moments from the ground and posting them minutes later. A cool 75 videos later, did it pay off? 📈 Our follower count has grown by more than 20%, blasting us into five figures 👍 Total likes have now passed 400,000 👀 Ten of our posts have more than 50,000 views and three have more than 250,000 Not bad for an operation with such a tiny team behind it! And my favourite part is that some of our best-performing posts were proper exclusives, including our interviews with Ed Miliband and tall Tory James McAlpine. We were also on the ground for viral moments like Andrea Jenkyns' eye-popping rendition of Insomniac. Massive thanks need to go to Jed Bradley, Noora Mykkanen and Jamie Levy for their phenomenal work with me at each of the conferences. It was exhausting but mostly just great fun.

I can't blame anyone who avoids the news. The world is in a state of chaos and uncertainty, and even a headline can be enough to send us into a spiral of anxiety. That's why this year, I've been determined to turn Metro.co.uk's Travel desk into a space for positivity and inspiration. Today, I'm excited to announce the launch of B-List Britain, the latest in a line of exclusive travel series created with the reader at its heart. Research shows that audiences engage most with content that fulfils a need, whether that's something that: 👩🏫 Educates ✨ Inspires 🕵 Analyses and gives perspective 😆 Diverts and entertains Written by Ben Aitken, the author of the new book Shitty Breaks, we explore UK cities traditionally overlooked by tourists, and why they deserve your attention. Metro.co.uk's Josie Copson interviewed Benjamin Zand about South Africa's white-only town, Kleinfontein. As people become increasingly small-minded around identity and want to live in countries that are specifically white British, he asks: 'Would we be happier just living with our own race?' As a 'mixed-race dude', he concludes: 'Probably not.' https://lnkd.in/e_S5WUqy

Audience Growth Editor @ Metro.co.uk | MA in Journalism

I have just wrapped up my second multimedia group training session for reporters at Metro.co.uk ✨ 💡 At the start of this year, we launched a project to help reporters grow their personal brands on social media, experiment with new platforms, and connect with their audiences in more meaningful ways. Journalism is changing rapidly; we know audiences want news from people, not just brands, and they’re finding stories on TikTok, Instagram and Reddit just as much as on homepages. 📽️ Since April, I have trained 7 reporters one-to-one, helping them define their niches and build confidence with multimedia. The results have been brilliant: TikToks reaching over 260k views, Instagram accounts growing by more than 1,000%, and reporters feeling empowered to bring their journalism to new audiences. Off the back of that success (and the newsroom’s growing interest), I designed and launched group workshops for reporters interested in becoming “news influencers,” helping them leave with three practical ways to start experimenting straight away. And the impact has truly gone beyond the numbers. It has been a collaborative and refreshing experience across the newsroom. Being an audience journalist often means a lot of convincing and trial and error, so seeing this programme embraced so positively has been a big part of its success! I have also learned a huge amount from building this programme, from designing a six-week curriculum and running sessions to tracking impact and developing my own leadership and public speaking skills. It has been one of the most rewarding things I have done, and I am proud to see editors backing the project and reporters excited to get involved. In today’s media landscape, giving journalists the confidence to amplify their voices and build audience trust is essential. And I am excited to keep driving this work forward! A big thank you to all the reporters I have worked with so far, to Martina Andretta and Sofia Victoria Delgado for trusting me with this project, and to Anna Staddon for being the TikTok queen she is and always answering my “random questions” along the way! 🤗 #Journalism #AudienceEngagement #PersonalBranding #NewsInnovation #ContentCreation
