𝗙𝗖𝗔 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗔𝗠𝗟 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿: 𝟳 𝗽𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗹𝗮𝘄 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 With the FCA designated as the Single Professional Services Supervisor (SPSS) for AML, firms should plan now for a different style of oversight, subject to legislation and a formal transition plan. As a recruiter focused on in-house risk and compliance for law firms — and having previously recruited for similar roles in FCA-regulated financial services organisations — here’s what I think matters most. • Supervision style will feel different. Expect more structured, evidence-led reviews, heavier use of management information, and clearer expectations for first-line testing. • Cost and capacity pressures. Budget for remediation work, quality assurance, and uplift to data and MI. The administrative load is likely to increase before it settles. • Governance clarity. Sharper accountability across MLRO, MLCO, intake/onboarding, conflicts, and fee-earner engagement, plus board-level reporting that stands up to external scrutiny. • File checks and QA. Make regular spot-checks part of BAU: sample matters monthly, log issues and fixes, and show progress in a concise report to leadership. • Data readiness. Keep AML records tidy and centralised. Your firm-wide risk assessment, policies, CDD and source-of-funds/wealth notes should be easy to find and export, not scattered across inboxes and PDFs. • Guidance will evolve. Expect updates as responsibilities move. Keep the focus on proportionate, risk-based compliance rather than box-ticking. • Talent market shift. Rising demand for AML Managers, QA Leads, MI/Reporting Analysts, and interim remediation reviewers, alongside MLRO/MLCO roles calibrated to FCA-style expectations. 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 • Quick health check. Can you pull, in one go, a single pack that shows your AML risks, policies, key checks, and the high-level numbers you report to the board? If not, make that your first tidy-up. • Update role profiles. Spell out who owns the MI, who does the regular file checks, who tracks fixes, and who keeps the paper trail. • Bring in interim help where needed. Use short-term reviewers, a QA lead and an MI/reporting specialist to clear backlogs without derailing BAU. • Widen shortlists. Consider candidates from FCA-regulated sectors and pair their controls experience with people who know how law firms actually run. If you lead Risk & Compliance and want to benchmark roles, organisation design or interim options, I’m happy to share what I’m seeing across the market.
