About us
The National Union of Journalists is the voice for journalists and journalism. We are an active, campaigning organisation seeking to improve the pay and conditions of our members and working to protect and promote media freedom, professionalism and ethical standards. NUJ members work across the media – as staffers and freelances, writers and reporters, editors and sub-editors, photographers and illustrators. Members work in broadcasting, newspapers, magazines, books, in public relations and in a variety of new media. Founded in 1907, the NUJ is among the biggest journalists' unions in the world. Together we're stronger and we can make a difference.

The NUJ has expressed its grave concern over the safety of journalists detained by Israeli authorities following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said: “We call on Israeli authorities to respect the rights of journalists and ensure the safety of those detained during the interception. Whilst urging their swift release, we stress alongside the International Federation of Journalists that Israeli forces must at all times adhere to their duties under international law.” https://lnkd.in/eqUCiZwq

The NUJ has condemned plans announced today by STV to make 60 redundancies and significant changes to coverage amid financial losses. Nick McGowan-Lowe, NUJ national organiser for Scotland, said: “These proposed cuts threaten the high quality of local and national journalism produced by STV News staff across Scotland, and we will be meeting both with our members and with STV management to discuss next steps in opposing these cuts and protecting jobs and quality journalism.” https://lnkd.in/eZ8EQRNc

Let's Stop The Freelance Rip-off! Freelance journalists, respond to the UK government's consultation on late payments and poor practices. Your voice will help highlight concerns over your poor treatment by many news platforms. Use our resources open to all. Tim Dawson, NUJ freelance organiser, said: “Freelance journalists are forced to accept business practices that any other sole trader would reject out of hand. Imagine commissioning a plumber to install a new bathroom, and then refusing payment because no one had actually used the facility, or not paying for desert in restaurants because ‘your policy’ is to pay for the main course and expect everything else thrown in for free? Every day NUJ officials deal with freelance journalists suffering real hardship because of their unfair treatment by news platforms. The government says that it is listening, so all freelance journalists should be raising their voices.” https://ow.ly/lvPC50WYVoR
