  • Neath Port Talbot Council has been awarded an ICE Wales Cymru Award for its scheme to alleviate flooding in Glynneath delivered with partners AtkinsRéalis and Knights Brown. The project was honoured with ICE Cymru’s Roy Edwards Award for Best Construction Project under £5m. The award celebrates the culmination of five years of dedicated development and delivery, made possible through vital funding from the Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme. Project Achievements - The Glynneath Flood Alleviation Scheme (FAS) was developed by the council’s Drainage Team in collaboration with its design and consultancy partners, Atkins Realis from 2019 to 2024. Implemented in two phases across Glynneath, the scheme included: 💠 Construction of a reinforced concrete intake structure at Lancaster Close, designed to contain a 1-in-100-year storm event and prevent flooding at Rock Street, Robert Street and the surrounding town centre area. 💠 Installation of a pressurised 900mm diameter culvert system, with additional upstream drainage to improve access and surface water management at Gelliceibryn. 💠 Installation of a 900mm pipe beneath a narrow footway and main carriageway. 💠 Resurfacing of carriageways and installation of concrete channels and drains to enhance surface water runoff. 💠 Installation of a new culvert and associated raised walls at Glynmelyn Road to replace a ford crossing.   Cllr Scott Jones, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Streetscene, said: “These works have significantly reduced flood risk for residents, businesses and improved infrastructure resilience in the area. “The award is a testament to the ambition and passion for flood risk management held by our Drainage Team. Receiving professional and industry recognition on a national scale is a proud moment. “It was good to see so many flood risk schemes in the shortlisted projects for the awards as it showcases all of the great work #FCERM (Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management) colleagues are undertaking in Wales. “I’d like to thank the fantastic team at Atkins Realis who led the design of this project on an excellent achievement, and a special thanks to our contractors Knights Brown who brought it to life. “This achievement highlights the importance of collaborative working, innovative engineering, and sustained investment in flood resilience. It is a shining example of what can be accomplished when local authorities, consultants, contractors, and government come together with a shared vision”. Deputy First Minister with responsibility for Climate Change, Huw Irranca-Davies, said: “Our investment in this scheme, totalling over £3.6m, will deliver long-term benefits to over 270 properties in the area – and is yet another example of our unwavering commitment to address the challenges we face from climate change.

  • One year on from the shutdown of Port Talbot’s blast furnace, the Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council has hailed the community’s response and is reminding affected people and businesses of the support available. Neath Port Talbot Council has played a central role in delivering the UK Government’s £80 million support programme established to address the widely-felt impact of the changes at Tata Steel UK. The support includes: 🔹Employment & Skills Fund - Retraining and employment support for displaced Tata Steel and other workers in the supply chain across #Wales affected by the transition. 🔹Supply Chain Transition Fund - Assistance for businesses across Wales heavily reliant on Tata Steel UK. 🔹Business Start-Up Fund - enables affected Tata Steel UK workers, their immediate families and individuals impacted in the supply chain to access dedicated support, guidance and grant funding to start a business or become self-employed. 🔹Business Resilience Fund - aims to strengthen business resilience and protect jobs by targeting businesses that are delivering local goods and services such as cafes, restaurants, retailers, etc., that have been impacted. 🔹Business Growth Fund - Capital and revenue grants to support diversification and expansion to help businesses, contractors and suppliers based in #NeathPortTalbot. 🔹Mental Health & Wellbeing Services – Including counselling and school programmes. Commenting on the difference the funding and support schemes have made, Council Leader Cllr Steve Hunt said: “The end of primary steelmaking in Port Talbot impacted many local people and businesses - not just in the steel industry. However, it has been inspiring to see how our communities have responded to the challenges this has brought. “Many affected workers have used the Employment & Skills Fund to move forward with their careers, some into entirely new fields of work or even emerging industries such as AI. “Others in affected local households have used the dedicated Business Start-Up Fund to begin their own business; become self-employed; or help if they are already running a small/early-stage business. “Likewise, there has been a good uptake of the Transition Board’s support for existing companies including the supply chain transition fund and business growth and resilience funds. Working alongside Business Wales, the council’s business team has supported many firms to innovate and to diversify their operations.” Neath Port Talbot Council has also been working closely with local welfare teams and organisations such as NPT Mind to ensure accessible emotional and mental health support during this challenging transition. “However, whilst Tata Steel UK’s transition has of course impacted the Port Talbot area more than any other, it is vital to remember that support is there for affected people and businesses across Wales. I would urge them to visit our website, contact our teams or meet them in person to find out more.”

  • Neath Port Talbot Council’s Digital and Adult Services Teams have won a national award for their innovative use of Artificial Intelligence in transforming the way Adult Social Care staff engage with residents. Earlier this month the teams picked up the APSE - Association for Public Service Excellence 2025 Award in the Best Innovation or Demand Management Initiative category in the annual APSE Awards held this year at the Marriott Hotel, Glasgow. The award recognises the council’s transformational approach to the use of #AI tools in supporting the day-to-day tasks of social workers, with an emphasis on cutting the significant amount of time spent on administrative tasks and engagement with back-office teams. Benefits have been realised through significantly reducing the administrative burden on social workers, slashing the amount of time spent on writing up case notes by 7.5 hours per week and speeding up the submission of case assessments by 8 hours a week. This innovative approach enables #AdultSocialCare staff to provide higher-quality assessments in a more timely manner, allowing them to focus on delivering better quality care rather than being tied up with administrative tasks. Staff are able to focus on what matters most—building relationships and supporting individuals—while technology handles routine documentation and administrative tasks. In addition, staff have seen an improvement in the quality and accuracy of meeting notes from their conversations with residents. Cllr Jo Hale, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member Adult Social Services & Health, said: “This award is a testament to the dedication of our teams and their commitment to embracing innovation. By harnessing AI, we’re not just improving efficiency—we’re enhancing the quality of care and freeing up our staff to focus on supporting residents.” Cllr Simon Knoyle, Neath Port Talbot Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Performance and Social Justice, said: “I’d like to congratulate our hard-working Digital and Adult Services Teams for what is a fine example of the use of emerging technologies to make life better for our residents. “I’m pleased our innovative approach to providing services for local people has been recognised with this UK-wide award.” #DigitalTransformation #SocialCareInnovation #SocialCareTech
