A new non-invasive liver cancer treatment, which uses ultrasound waves to destroy tumours, has been performed for the very first time at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The procedure, called ‘histotripsy’ only takes 30 minutes and uses ultrasound to create tiny “bubble clouds” from naturally-occurring gases that are in targeted tumour tissues. These bubbles form and collapse quickly, destroying the cancer cells without the need for surgery, radiation or chemotherapy. The treatment takes as little as 30 minutes, with minimal or no pain, meaning patients can recover quickly and can go home the same day. Roger, the first NHS patient to receive histotripsy, said, ‘I feel privileged to receive this care; it was an amazing experience. ‘It is impressive to think that sound waves can treat cancer, without the need for patients like me to go through intensive surgery, at what already is a stressful time.’ Dr Teik Choon See, the consultant who led the procedure, said the treatment shows ‘real hope for patients’. At 103 years old, Beryl is still breaking records! Meet the world's oldest female volunteer according to Guinness World Records, who continues to serve her community at @London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust, Ealing Hospital's Friends Café every week. Beryl started volunteering in 2003 when she was 80, preparing food and working on the till. Over two decades later, she's still going strong, proving that age truly is just a number. ‘By volunteering you’re helping other people, but in a funny way you’re also helping yourself,’ Beryl reflects. She credits volunteering with giving her ‘a new lease on life’ and recommends it to people of any age. This World Mental Health Day, we're highlighting how the NHS is making mental health support easier to access. Earlier this year, the first 24/7 Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre opened in Tower Hamlets, East London, part of East London NHS Foundation Trust. The centre brings together NHS teams, peer support workers, and voluntary sector partners under one roof — providing holistic care that includes help with housing, employment and wellbeing. It’s the first of six centres opening across England, helping people get the care they need closer to home. ‘This has been one of the most valuable experiences of my medical training, and one I will carry with me throughout my career as a doctor.’ Meet Maxine, a fifth-year medical student who recently completed her neurosurgery elective at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust. Training under the neurosurgery teams, Maxine has scrubbed in on cranial and spinal operations, and observed or assisted in more than 20 cases – including deep brain stimulation, lumbar decompressions and spinal fusions. ‘I was so fortunate to learn from such an outstanding team of neurosurgeons. They all created a welcoming, supportive environment and were incredibly generous with their time and knowledge. ‘A particular highlight was seeing the level of technical innovation – including using XRlabs SIM extended reality platform during surgical planning, and 3D display technology to observe microsurgery. ‘The elective has given me exposure to a highly specialised field and challenged me to learn new skills quickly.’ Thanks to the team at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, and good luck for the rest of your journey Maxine! It can be hard to take the time you need to heal from the trauma of pregnancy loss. In March 2024, NHS trusts in England were encouraged to offer staff who experience a loss in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy up to 10 days paid leave for the mother (or parent who was pregnant), and up to 5 days paid leave for the partner. Today, 97% of all NHS trust have either made this offer available to staff or are in the process of making it available. This means NHS colleagues can take the time they need to heal from what is a very difficult experience. Through the national baby and pregnancy loss policy framework, NHS staff can take paid time off to attend follow up appointments, scans, and tests – and for any mental health-related support that might be needed too. Staff who come back to work after their pregnancy loss can also be offered occupational health support including referrals to specialist services or specialist miscarriage and baby loss organisations.
