An open, fair, green North Somerset.

About us

Our vision is for an open, fair, green North Somerset. We will provide strong community leadership and work transparently with our residents, businesses and partners to deliver our ambitions for North Somerset. We aim to reduce inequalities and promote fairness and opportunity for everyone. We will lead our communities to protect and enhance our environment, tackle the climate emergency and drive sustainable development. To help us focus on the right thing we have set ourselves three broad aims, each with a set of priorities. Achieving these priorities will help us to realise our vision. Our aims are: - a thriving and sustainable place - a council which empowers and cares about people; and - an open and enabling organisation How we do things is just as important as what we do, so we also have an agreed set of behaviours for everyone who works here: - we act with integrity - we respect each other - we innovate - we care - we collaborate Read more about the council, the area and our plans for the future in our corporate plan at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/corporateplan.

  • Young people took centre stage at the first ever North Somerset Youth Parliament earlier this month 🙌 🌟 🤩 We were delighted to welcome more than 40 passionate young people from local schools and groups to the Town Hall in Weston, as the North Somerset Youth Parliament kicked off in style! The Youth Parliament gives young people a stronger voice in local decision-making 🌍✨ They'll also elect two of their members to become Members of the Youth Parliament (MYP's) representing North Somerset on a national level and making sure young people’s voices are heard across the nation. During the session, members took part in team-building activities and a vote to identify their initial priorities for the year ahead. These include tackling racism and hateful behaviour, mental health support and safer streets and communities. A big thank you to everyone who's supported this initiative and to the parliament members 👏 We're excited to support these incredible young leaders as they help to shape the future of our North Somerset communities ➡️ Want to know more about the North Somerset Youth Parliament? • Now that renovation work is complete on the three Weston High Street shops, we’re celebrating all the positive impacts that this contract has achieved 🏪 🛠️ 💪 🎉 We work with all our contractors to maximise social value. This is a way of describing the positive impacts that a contract can achieve in addition to the physical work. Huge thanks to our contractor Bray & Slaughter for all their hard work 🙏 As well as delivering a fantastic finish on the physical work, they have also delivered the following social value: 💷 Invested locally – prioritised working with local people and supply chains. Over £200,000 was invested in the local economy through suppliers based in North Somerset. A previously unemployed local person was also employed as a labourer on the project. 🤝 Worked with the local community – through a partnership with the Growing At Grove Park Community Interest Company (CIC), 34 hours of hands-on support were provided and materials worth over £800 were donated. Work included building a greenhouse and raised planters to support biodiversity and accessible gardening, as well as improving facilities to benefit community wellbeing. ♻️ Diverted over 4.32 tonnes of waste from landfill – part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, Bray & Slaughter aim to minimise environmental impacts wherever possible. 🦺 Promoted construction careers – an apprentice in Construction Management spent 34 weeks working on our High Street project. They played a key role in its delivery, carrying out day-to-day site responsibilities and assisting with project management tasks, gaining valuable practical experience. They also ran a session with Weston College T-Level construction students providing an insight into careers in construction, the value of apprenticeships, and an opportunity to meet the contractor and ask questions. 🏪 57 High Street, which was previously a vacant unit, was let to Warrens Bakery Limited. It opened to the public in June. 🏪 The other units – 67 to 69 and 73 – have been refurbished to attract occupiers to create jobs in the town. They are now ready for tenants to bring them back to use. These units are being actively marketed by property consultancy Carter Jonas. Business owners interested in letting these units should call 0117 922 1222. • Work starts today (Wednesday 1 October) to further improve Marine Lake in Weston-super-Mare. The lake itself will remain open until Monday 6 October 📢 🙌 🌊 Following an open procurement exercise, we've appointed #Weston based company EJ McGrath Construction Limited to carry out the work, including: ℹ️ Improving signage around the lake and installing a new welcome sign at the entrance to improve visibility 🚣  Utilising and repurposing under-used space to create a new concession, equipment hire and storage facility 🚾 Upgrading and increasing the number of public toilets in use, including one accessible toilet, while changing them to self-contained cubicles with direct entry from the promenade 🚲 Installing cycle racks 🧰 Improving access by repairing, resurfacing or rebuilding steps and ramps, and upgrading handrails 🛠️ Repairing and resurfacing the lower walkway around the lake ⛩️ Repairing the Madeira Gardens pavilion roof. This work is due to complete by April 2026. Designs were shaped by local people, community groups and organisations as a result of engagement led by We Made That, in collaboration with Super Culture. This included the 'Grove Park Gathering' - a free family-friendly public event held in the park last June. People took part in a variety of imaginative activities including illustration, poetry, arts and crafts to help get creative ideas flowing in informal, fun and inclusive ways This has been made possible thanks to our successful bid for £20m from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. • The perfect weather for a crane to do some heavy lifting at Birnbeck Pier 🏗️ ☀️ We’re crane crazy in Weston this week! Following on from our earlier update about our Winterstoke Road Bridge project, a crane this morning completed the following manoeuvres as part of our Birnbeck landside restoration phase: 👷 Lifted welfare site offices into place for our contractor Smith & Brenson Ltd 🔐 Installed units to be used for storage ℹ️ Relocated the BIRNBECK REGENERATION TRUST information hub. In the last week or so, our contractor has: 🧹 Cleared all rubbish from site 🛠️ Temporarily widened the entrance between the car park and the promenade for essential site access 🛠️ Started to demolish the small modern red brick building in the car park 🧰 Finished installing temporary essential services to site, including power and water. They’ve also had various site visits including from our funding partner Historic England, our Principal Conservation Officer and a specialist restoration company. These visits are an essential part of our plan to carefully remove and store heritage items before they are restored by specialists. These items include the listed turnstiles at the entrance to the pier. Specialist maritime contractor TMS Ltd, who delivered the first phase of emergency and safety works on Birnbeck Island at the end of last year, are also on site again carrying out essential sea wall repairs. This work is being funded from an allocation of £4.47m from the £20m awarded to the council by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government through the former Levelling Up Fund. Just a reminder that anyone visiting is encouraged to travel by bus and rail. If you need to drive, the nearest alternative pay and display car park is Madeira Road. • Breaking news: Lottery lifeline secures future of Birnbeck Pier restoration 🎉 Our bid for an additional £5.54m in funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund for the restoration of #BirnbeckPier has been successful, it has just been announced. Councillors, who were made aware of this news immediately ahead of this evening’s full council meeting (Tuesday 16 September), voted in favour of awarding the contract to restore the structure of the Grade II* Listed pier in Weston-super-Mare. The contract award was previously due to be determined at the July full council meeting but this not possible due to the RNLI withdrawing from the project days before. Councillors were set to consider the future of the restoration of the Birnbeck Pier structure and the major funding gap that placed that element of the project at jeopardy. However, the decision required from them changed following news of The Heritage Fund’s award. The contract has been awarded to Mackley, a specialist civil engineering contractor with extensive experience and expertise of working in a marine environment and with heritage structures. This follows a competitive open tender process that took place between 30 January and 25 April 2025 that resulted in four bids. North Somerset Council also committed capital funding to cover risk contingency, ensuring the project is delivered responsibly and sustainably. Work on the pier structure is due to start by the end of 2025 and take just over a year, completing by the end of 2026.
