Day 1 of the Northern Accelerator's #EnergyInnovation #sprint kicked off today. We couldn't be in a more fitting venue than the beautiful The Common Room given its deep mining and engineering history. Our sprint will help academics commercialise their research to deliver sustainable solutions to the challenges held by the energy sector, as well as communities and businesses that rely on affordable, reliable energy sources. Solutions are being developed from research in specialisms as diverse as #engineering, #geology, #materials processing and #circulareconomy, #behaviouralpsychology and many more. So far we have heard fantastic lightning talks from: ⚡Jordan Christie on how the Northern Accelerator match makes between academics and business executives to speed up the commercialisation journey. ⚡Stephen Hampson of H2CHP Limited on the importance of validating the problem and leveraging funding from both VC and industry partners to ensure successful ventures. ⚡Ross Lowrie of Net Zero North East England on the unique challenges the North East faces in terms of challenges like the cost of retrofit, but also massive opportunities in areas like offshore wind, wind turbine manufacturing and effective use of the extensive natural environment for carbon sequestration. ⚡Richard Hynes-Cooper of Northern Gas Networks on the needs of communities and industry to implement a diverse range of energy solutions to meet their varied demands, and how the #NetZeroResearchVillage is providing physical testing opportunities as well as large scale data sets on energy usage for innovators to use to inform their work. ⚡Ed Jones of Energy Innovation Centre spoke of their current live challenges and the support for innovators in the energy sector. Microbritt to grow big with headquarters move “Expanding our operational footprint tenfold allows us to significantly enhance our manufacturing capabilities, accommodate cutting-edge equipment and drive further innovation in precision microfabrication.” Microfabrication firm Microbritt LTD is expanding operations with a new base in Cramlington, Northumberland, which they say will increase operational space tenfold to accommodate growing demand. The move follows a £400,000 investment in 2024 from the North East Innovation Fund, managed by Northstar Ventures UK and Angel Groups, which, along with the new base, will enable the company to scale production, enhance research and development and grow its workforce.
