This week is National Customer Service Week. To mark this, the Ofgem team visited EDF's Vulnerable Consumers Call Centre in Exeter to see first-hand how one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers is working to support customers in vulnerable circumstances 📞 Led by Ofgem's Chair Mark McAllister and senior colleagues from our Retail and Stakeholder Engagement teams, the visit provided a valuable opportunity to engage directly with EDF’s leadership and to assess their approach to customer service for those most at risk. From call listening sessions to discussions on EDF’s Winter Support Package and their partnership with IncomeMax, the visit highlighted both the challenges and innovations in delivering compassionate, effective support. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration across the sector to tackle shared issues like energy debt and affordability. This engagement forms part of Ofgem’s wider strategy to: 🟠 Promote best practice across the GB energy retail market 🟠 Strengthen regulatory oversight of vulnerable customer support 🟠 Champion consumer protection through policy and stakeholder engagement We are committed to ensuring that all energy suppliers deliver high-quality service, especially for those who need it most. #NationalCustomerServiceWeek #Ofgem #ConsumerProtection #VulnerabilityMatters #EnergySector #EDF #StakeholderEngagement #CustomerService

This week, Ofgem participated in the Scottish Rural & Islands Housing Conference 2025, which brought together housing leaders, board members and innovators from across Scotland to explore the future of rural housing and communities. Ofgem's Deputy Director of Systems & Processes Melissa Giordano gave a short talk about 'Taking Stock of the Transition' of RTS (The Radio Teleswitch Service). The conference showcased the best of Scottish research and practice. It was a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and strengthen our ongoing relationship with the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA). We’re committed to supporting sustainable, resilient rural communities and events like this help drive that mission forward. 🔗 Tap to discover more about RTS: https://ow.ly/8pVE50X9Fja #RTS #Scotland #SFHA #CommunityEnergy #NetZero #Ofgem

When I joined the energy industry in 1995, it felt like we were always in crisis mode, either trying to clean up the system or lower bills. Today, we must do both. Reform is essential, but what we need now is more than just a call to action. We need alignment. That’s why we’re launching the Energy Networks Innovation Taskforce (ENIT), chaired by Laura Sandys CBE and will include as members Akshay Kaul Cordi O'Hara OBE FEI Chris Burchell Nicola Connelly Guy Newey Nick Winser CBE FREng and others. This one-time taskforce will bring together senior leaders including CEOs from across the energy networks to define a bold portfolio of Innovation Challenges that unlock economic, customer, and decarbonisation benefits. These challenges will form the foundation for future innovation, funded through Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF). The goal? A portfolio of outcome-driven challenges that tackle the blockers and accelerate deployment of solutions that lower bills and deepen decarbonisation. These goals are not mutually exclusive, they’re mutually reinforcing. ENIT isn’t just another taskforce. It’s a chance to align on what matters most and act with urgency. There are technologies and approaches ready to go; we just need to clear the path. Our first session is Monday, October 13th. I’ll share updates as we move forward. I’m confident that this group will deliver the alignment we need. #energyinnovation David Richardson Luke Ames Blackaby Aiste Garneviciene Jodie Giles Energy Systems Catapult

📢 Today, we have published a consultation on the methodology for how we’ll set the next electricity distribution price control – ED3. In this consultation we have set out proposals for how we intend to regulate the cost and quality of service from the Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) in the ED3 period (2028 to 2033). The consultation will be open for 8 weeks and we’re keen to hear from all stakeholders. 🔗 Read the ED3 consultation and share your views to help shape how electricity distribution is regulated: https://lnkd.in/erF4d33N #EnergyPolicy #ED3 #ElectricityDistribution #ConsumerVoice #OfgemConsultation

We're delighted to have secured further funding from the Ofgem Energy Redress Scheme for our Energy Advice Service in collaboration with Citizens Advice Bury and Bolton. The Energy Advice Service provides home energy checks, help with switching tariffs and support to resolve issues with energy suppliers - ensuring the most vulnerable stay warm at home over the colder months 🏠💡
Congratulations to our recent Round 11 grantees for securing funding in phase two of the Ofgem Energy Redress Scheme. These projects have received funding through the Main Fund to support households who are most at risk from cold homes and high energy bills. Recently, Ofgem visited Biaco Energy in West Sussex to learn more about their prototype energy cell technology and discuss the role of innovators in shaping the future of the energy market. We saw a live demonstration of Biaco’s technology and heard from their leadership team about its potential to reduce consumer bills, tackle fuel poverty and support Net Zero goals. As the regulator, Ofgem is committed to supporting innovation and working with suppliers, Distribution Network Operators and Transmission Operators to help small innovators bring new ideas to market. Thank you to Biaco for hosting us and sharing their vision for a cleaner, smarter energy future. #EnergyInnovation #NetZero #FutureOfEnergy #Ofgem #BiacoEnergy

Delighted to have joined a Spotlight session with Dr Colin Paterson and Dr Markus Borg during the Centre for Assuring Autonomy Symposium last week in York to discuss the evolution of AMLAS (Assurance of Machine Learning for use in Autonomous Systems) and the regulatory challenges of machine learning and autonomy in the energy sector. As Head of AI Policy at Ofgem, I emphasised the importance of robust, outcome-focused regulation to ensure the safe adoption of AI and autonomous systems in safety-critical sectors like energy. Our work at Ofgem is centred on delivering clear, ethical guidance and practical tools, such as the AI Reg Lab and (if viable) a technical sandbox, to support responsible innovation, protect consumers, and build public trust. Key takeaways from my presentation: ✅ AI is already transforming the energy sector, but we must address risks around transparency, fairness, and system complexity. ✅ Regulation must keep pace with technological change, supporting both innovation and safety. ✅ Collaboration between regulators, industry, and academia is essential to unlock the benefits of AI while safeguarding the public interest. Thank you to CfAA for hosting such a timely and important discussion. #AI #EnergySector #Regulation #AMLAS #SafetyCritical #Innovation #EthicalAI
