As part of #BlackHistoryMonth, our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Staff Network has organised a programme of events for colleagues. In collaboration with other Trusts across the Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West Integrated Care Board (BOB ICB), the network hosted a conference on this year’s theme: Standing Firm in Power and Pride. The event brought together nearly 200 colleagues to learn, share experiences, and celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Black community. Thank you to the BAME Staff Network for making this possible!

It's Speak Up Week, and here at OUH our Freedom to Speak Up (FtSU) colleagues are holding roadshows up until Monday 20 October for our staff to come and have a chat and find out more about the support they offer. Staff are welcome to come along to speak to the team and find out how they can speak up and raise any concerns safely and confidentially.

The fantastic work of Laura Clay, one of our Health Play Specialists, has been honoured in Starlight Children's Foundation - UK's Health Play Awards 2025. Named as a runner-up in the Health Play Specialist of the Year category, Laura was celebrated for helping children and teenagers feel less anxious and more confident during treatment. On 14 October each year, we join our Allied Health Professionals in celebrating Allied Health Professions Day. We’re proud to have around 1,000 #AHPs working across our sites – delivering compassionate excellence as part of #OneTeamOneOUH. AHPs are the third largest workforce in the NHS, and their dedication, skill, and care make a huge difference to our patients every day. There are 14 allied health professions, including radiographers, physiotherapists, and speech and language therapists. 🗣️ “Over the years things have changed – but at the heart of our role we remain the advocate for the child in a scary, uncertain place, helping to make their hospital experience the best it can be” It’s Play in Healthcare Week, and this year we’re celebrating 30 years of the awareness campaign and 50 years of play being used to support children and young people in hospital settings. To mark the occasion, Sheila Caldicott, one of our Senior Health Play Specialists, reflects on her 43-year career in play services and the evolution of the profession. Sheila has worked at OUH since October 1982 and was part of the very first Play in Healthcare Week event in 1995. This week our Infectious Diseases Admin Team said farewell to two much-valued and longstanding staff members. Helen Bricknell (left) began work at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre aged just 17, as a Trainee Medical Secretary - in 1972! She returned to work at Oxford University Hospitals after a career break, and joined the Infectious Diseases Service in 1991, where she has worked as a consultant's secretary and administration manager. Our Infectious Diseases Consultants speak fondly of meeting Helen when they were Senior House Officers; how they have appreciated her consistent support over many years of service, and how she is "...always helpful, cheerful and wonderful to work with". Janet Malone (right) has been an integral part of our Infectious Diseases Service for 11 years, working tirelessly and efficiently not only in that role but also within our Chronic Fatigue Service. She will be sorely missed. We would like to wish both Helen and Janet a very happy retirement, and to say thank you both, for all you have done for #OneTeamOneOUH 💙
