This is in interesting article written by Philip Nicholas and I on why it is important to identify chronic pain cases early given their relatively high cycle times (and subsequent costs) when compared to other injury types. The data is really interesting. There are some red flags and ideas of what to look out for, along with a useful link to our chronic pain handling guide usefully drafted by Luisa Lamb and our Chronic Pain technical unit at Weightmans. Nociplastic pain conditions, including Fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), chronic migraine headaches, chronic temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), chronic primary bladder pain syndrome, and complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), involve pain caused by altered pain signal processing in the central nervous system, not tissue damage or nerve injury.
