  • PALEUS Acrylics are sponsoring a 4-year PhD project as part of the Materials 4.0 CDT (Digital Materials CDT, with the Henry Royce Institute) at The University of Sheffield, as part of our company’s mission to make ourselves a more sustainable business and at the same time sponsoring UK innovation.   Since October 2024, Zak Pinkney has been working in the chemical engineering department, to build a continuous flow reactor for improving sustainable R&D practices and allowing us to study emulsion polymerisation process in greater detail than we can today. More specifically, he has been working on the polymerisation of 2-octyl acrylate (2-OA).   2-OA is a biobased monomer from BASF derived from renewable sources, with 73% C14 traceable content using castor oil feedstocks. We can substitute this monomer directly into our acrylic polymers to get products with a bio renewable content of up to 67%.   Using renewable feedstocks, green energy to power our manufacturing, and manufacturing in the UK for UK customers - makes us the more sustainable choice.   #Biobasedpolymers #Biorenewable #Acrylics #Coatings #Sustainability #UKinnovation #CircularEconomy #DigitalRevolution #UKResearch #CarbonFootprint

  • PALEUS are committed to creating sustainable solutions . In June, PALEUS's Technical Applications Manager, Dr Shannon North (PhD) attended ACI Biobased Coatings Europe Conference 2025, in Madrid, Spain. Here’s a round up of Dr North’s key takeaways from the conference in Madrid specific to acrylic polymer coatings 🔹Shifting to a Circular Economy Key innovations driving the transition to a circular economy include the use of lower carbon feedstocks such as biomass, carbon dioxide (CO₂), and recycled carbon. While biomass is a renewable option, it still emits CO₂ when burned, albeit less than fossil fuels. The benefits of carbon storage are only significant if the carbon is stored for over 100 years. Enhancing material durability is another important strategy, enabling products to achieve equal or greater performance with less material. Other approaches of consideration focus on reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and increasing the use of recycled content to minimize environmental impact. 🔹Approaches to develop high value bio-based materials To increase bio-content in materials, several strategies are being pursued, including creating identical drop-in replacements, chemically similar alternatives, polymerizing biobased monomers, and developing entirely new binder solutions. However, challenges remain—customers are often unwilling to pay more for a product that offers no added benefit. Therefore, new bio-based products must deliver clear value or improved performance. Embracing innovative materials can lead to novel solutions and enhanced functionality. Importantly, since 70–80% of a product’s environmental impact is determined during the research and development phase, early-stage design decisions are critical to maximizing sustainability. 🔹Bio-based materials and their carbon footprint impact Raw materials account for 52% of a manufacturing company’s carbon footprint, highlighting their significant impact. In the building and construction sector, which contributes around 30% of global emissions, approximately 60% of these emissions stem from material use alone. Despite their potential, biobased materials are not yet widely recognized as a means to reduce scope 3 emissions. Unlike the fuel and gasoline sectors, the chemical industry currently lacks incentives such as tax reductions or regulatory targets to encourage the adoption of more sustainable materials. 🔹Key Takeaways and looking to the future Emerging sustainability megatrends include a growing demand for green products, the introduction of tougher regulations, the rise of sustainable alternatives, and an increased focus on health and safety. Achieving real, lasting change will require collaboration across the entire value chain. While approaches like mass balance can help, they don't always guarantee true environmental benefits. To make a meaningful impact, brands must adopt a holistic sustainability strategy rather than focusing on individual products in isolation.

  • As a producer and supplier of acrylic polymer emulsions – a core competency of PALEUS Acrylics is the company’s in-house polymerisation and compounding capabilities to develop and manufacture bespoke product solutions from monomer through to polymer for our CASE industry customers, ready for the end user or for onwards formulation.   Growth and diversification of our technical work with respect to developing new acrylic polymers utilising new technologies, the compounding of these polymers into high performance end products, and the application testing we do to support our customers in their evaluation, has demanded we action an upgrade to our development laboratory facilities at Denaby Main, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Phase I was completed in August 2024 with the installation of new, high-specification fume cupboards in our main synthesis laboratory. Phase II followed in June 2025, introducing modern worktops and benches throughout the lab. Phase III will be actioned in H1 2026 to upgrade our applications laboratory.   These enhancements have created a cleaner, more efficient environment for our chemists - enabling greater productivity, and reinforcing our commitment to providing our customers with the technical support they expect and demand.   #PALEUS #SyntheticChemistry #SyntheticDevelopment #Coatings #Adhesives #Acrylicpolymers #PALEUSAcrylics #Palacryl #Palatac #UKmanufacturing

It was great to see so many existing customers during the 3 days of the European Coatings Show (ECS25), Nuremburg, Germany 25 – 27 March 2025, and meet new customers from across Europe with whom we are continuing discussions. The Show provided us the perfect platform to launch our new Palacryl 7000 series of pure acrylic products which deliver enhanced water beading, superior weather resistance and adhesion to a wide range of substrates - with feedback to date confirming the excellent results we have seen in the competitive benchmarking studies we have completed. Thank you to all who visited us.   #acrylics #polymers #coatings #Adhesives #construction additives #ECS25

  • Our acrylic emulsion polymer plant expansion has reached a major milestone - the new reactors are in place! Thanks to detailed planning, they fit perfectly, and the installation went smoothly with a little help from the weather. Now, the work of connecting and commissioning them to bring them to life begins. This upgrade increases our capacity and strengthens our ability to deliver high-performance acrylic polymer emulsions and pressure-sensitive adhesives.   #PaleusAcrylics #Manufacturing #PlantExpansion #Innovation #AcrylicPolymers #SustainableManufacturing
