A group of MPs, including DCMS Minister Steph Peacock, joined parkrun staff and new permanent CEO Elizabeth Duggan for a special event at Westminster on Tuesday 14 October to celebrate the charity’s 21st anniversary. The event organised by Nick Smith MP, Chair of the parkrun APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) saw the MPs join a number of parkrun’s partners to hear about the growth and impact of parkrun, which in just over two decades has grown from 13 runners and five volunteers on a Saturday morning in Bushy Park to a global community of more than 11 million people. New research marking #WorldMentalHealthDay and parkrun’s 21st anniversary revealed that taking part in parkrun boosts life satisfaction, driven mainly by ‘improved happiness’ and ‘mental wellbeing’. The findings, based on the biggest ever study of UK parkrun participants led by Sheffield Hallam University, also highlighted how parkrun is worth £689 a year to those who regularly take part, including in NHS services, making it one of the most cost-effective and preventative public health initiatives in the UK. The research also revealed the biggest increases in life satisfaction were likely to be felt by those who rated their health as “very bad” when registering for parkrun with an estimated 1.6 point increase in life satisfaction based on ONS (Office of National Statistics) one to ten scale of life satisfaction measure. Those least active, in early middle age, and participants from deprived communities were also more likely to have higher rates of life satisfaction as a result of taking part. Following a competitive open recruitment process, the parkrun Global Board of Trustees are thrilled to announce Elizabeth Duggan as permanent Chief Executive Officer. Elizabeth, known as Lil, joined parkrun following a decade at Active Surrey, and has been serving as Interim CEO since Wednesday 30 April 2025. In that time she has already overseen significant progress including new hires in the digital and governance space, and most recently the acquisition of the popular ‘5k’ app. Under her interim leadership parkrun has experienced record breaking growth both in the UK and internationally.
