Updates

  • Yesterday, the Government issued a press release announcing new regulations for Collective Defined Contribution (CDC) pension schemes, alongside the launch of a consultation on policy for Retirement CDC schemes, highlighting a recent study that estimated an income up to 60% higher than that available through an annuity. Quoted in the Government’s press release, Zoe Alexander, Executive Director of Policy and Advocacy at Pensions UK, said: “Multi-employer CDC schemes have the potential to boost retirement savings by sharing risks between savers. Success depends on striking the right balance between strong protections for members, simplicity and fairness of scheme design. We agree with Government that innovation in CDC carries huge promise for savers and are pleased that this Government is supporting the development of both multi-employer and at-retirement CDCs.” ➡️ Read the Government’s full press release here: https://ow.ly/pwqA50XgN47 📚 You can also explore our CDC resources in our member hub: https://ow.ly/tNAF50XgN48

  • Yesterday, we published our Budget submission to the Chancellor. While we recognise the Government’s focus on increasing revenue, we caution that short-term tax changes could undermine confidence in the pensions system and lead savers to make potentially harmful decisions about their pension pots. Recent experience shows how speculation alone can trigger a surge in pension withdrawals, reducing assets under management and limiting the capacity of pension funds to invest in growth assets. If the Government does choose to introduce a reform, it should consider our Five Principles for Pensions Taxation: promoting adequacy, fairness, simplicity, the right behaviours, and long-term sustainability. We welcome the Government’s collaboration with the sector to improve access to suitable UK private market opportunities: a strong investment pipeline is critical to the delivery of the Mansion House Accord. New research from Pensions UK shows that while 44% of households say their finances have worsened, only 4% have reduced pension contributions. People are cutting back elsewhere but continuing to prioritise saving, with 65% saying contributions should be higher.
