Out now! The Choir of Peterhouse's debut album, Music from the Peterhouse Partbooks, directed by Simon Jackson, has been released today by Naxos Music Group. With their dramatic history, the Peterhouse Partbooks are among the most significant collections of English sacred music manuscripts from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Including several world premiere recordings, this programme presents a survey of the rich variety in the Peterhouse manuscripts, from the Venetian splendour of Croce’s eight-part anthem Omnes gentes plaudite, to the penitential intimacy of Tallis’s O God be merciful unto us. The album is available to stream and purchase: https://lnkd.in/eSpt_Qje

A medieval literary puzzle found in the Peterhouse library which has stumped scholars for 130 years has finally been solved by Dr James Wade, Bye-Fellow of Peterhouse and Fellow of Girton College, and Dr Seb Falk, Fellow of Girton College. Detailed today in The Review of English Studies, their breakthrough reveals that the aptly named Song of Wade was a chivalric romance not a monster-filled epic as had been previously assumed. The discovery solves the most famous mystery in Chaucer's writings and provides rare evidence of a medieval preacher referencing pop culture in a sermon. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eEHw2gdw

Professor Jennifer Richards, Fellow and Director of Studies in English at Peterhouse, and Chair in the Faculty of English, has been appointed chair for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029 sub-panel for English Language and Literature. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in UK higher education providers (HEIs). The REF outcomes are used to inform the allocation of around £2 billion per year of public funding for universities’ research. Professor Richards is one of 34 sub-panels chairs who will lead their units of assessment through the criteria setting phase, beginning later this year, and on through to the final assessment in 2029. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eKSDQ84b

It's time for this year's festive treat from the Choir of Peterhouse. Inspired by their tour to Scandinavia in the summer, Peterhouse Choir’s Christmas video this year is a celebration of Nordic folksong: the Norwegian folk carol Eit barn er født i Betlehem (A Child is born in Bethlehem) arranged by contemporary Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre. You can enjoy this in full on the Peterhouse Choir's YouTube channel: https://lnkd.in/ecVpXiSm Merry Christmas from all of us here at Peterhouse! "Academia thrives in an environment of open and healthy discourse and there is no justification for hatred, misogyny or threatening behaviour." - The Master, Professor Andy Parker Read his full message of support here: https://lnkd.in/ePD7ssDC
Dr Louks, we support you. Last week, Cambridge PhD student Dr Ally Louks published this photo on X to celebrate passing her viva with no corrections. Her tweet went viral, attracting over 100 million views. But the attention that Ally's achievement received turned to harassment and misogyny when trolls attacked Ally's PhD topic, her education, her achievement, and her gender. In the days afterwards, thousands of commenters - including from Cambridge's own student, staff and alumni communities - have added their supportive messages for Ally. Ally has told us that the majority of the 11,000 comments and 20,000 retweets are from people showing "generosity, intellectual curiosity, and kindness". Curious about Dr Louks' topic? 'Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose' studies how literature registers the importance of olfactory discourse - the language of smell and the olfactory imagination it creates - in structuring our social world. Congratulations, Dr Louks, on passing your viva with no corrections! Dr Louks is part of Peterhouse at Cambridge. #CambridgeUniversity #UniversityOfCambridge #Cambridge
