My first Blue Earth Summit this week – what a cool event! It was an honour to have Plastic-i named in the BE100 and to have the opportunity to present our work on ocean and water intelligence. Huge thanks to Charlotte de Montmorency, Guy Hayler, and Will Hayler for the invitation and for creating an inspiring platform. The ocean and water theme was front and centre, with standout sessions on The Hidden Cost of Overfishing, Oceans: Our Biggest Opportunity on Earth, and Blue Carbon and Community-based Coastal Rewilding. My highlight was Rethinking the UK Water System with Clive Lewis MP, Feargal Sharkey, Becky Malby BEM, and Joanne Robbins – a passionate discussion about water quality and policy change. Incredible energy and oratory… and nice to have a quick yarn with Feargal afterwards. Fantastic also to see Kirsty Schneeberger MBE at Athena Blue sharing powerful insights on the investment opportunity for the ocean – from the $175 billion annual funding gap to innovative mechanisms like blue carbon credits, blue bonds, and debt-for-nature swaps, plus the importance of measurement, reporting and verification technologies (which is where Plastic-i comes in) to scale credible blue-finance solutions. And a pleasure to catch up with our collaborators at the National Oceanography Centre – Claire Evans, Jo Cole, and Sam Stanton. Massive congratulations to our fellow Oxford-based, water-loving friend Jose Roberto Castro and the team at Segura, winners of the START category! Feeling inspired by the momentum building around the ocean-innovation community and excited to play our part in driving scalable, data-driven solutions for healthier water. Looking forward to Blue Earth Summit 2026! #BlueEarthSummit #OceanInnovation #BlueCarbon #WaterQuality #Plastici #ClimateTech #BE100

Plastic-i is proud to be featured by the UK Space Agency during World Space Week #WSW2025 for our work on the Sequestra project. #Sequestra project brings together satellite technology, drone imagery, and AI to monitor the health and carbon dynamics of seagrass meadows along the UK coastline - ecosystems that are both ecologically rich and critical in the fight against climate change. This collaboration with the UK Space Agency reflects a belief we hold strongly: space technology has an essential role to play in protecting and restoring natural ecosystems. Turning data into meaningful, actionable insights is how we can enable smarter, more sustainable decisions for our coastlines. The future of protecting our waters won’t be won with monitoring alone — it demands foresight. Last month, two important news pieces by UK Space Agency and NI SPACE highlighted how Northern Ireland is harnessing space technology to tackle the challenge of blue-green algae in Lough Neagh. We’re proud that Plastic-i, through our Bloomcast NI platform, is part of this initiative — turning data from satellites, drones, and the environment into practical forecasts that support communities, ecosystems, and decision-makers. Algal blooms are not just a scientific problem; they affect livelihoods, public health, and trust in how we safeguard natural resources. Better tools to predict and respond are essential, but they must go hand-in-hand with action on the root causes. If your community or organisation is navigating algal blooms-related challenges, reach out to discuss how our Bloomcast solution can help forecast and manage these risks before they escalate. We're delighted to announce that Plastic-i has been named as a supplier to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) under Phase 2 of the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) to tackle blue-green algae blooms in Lough Neagh using space technology. Our CEO James Doherty met with Minister Andrew Muir at Parliament Buildings in Belfast yesterday, who showed real interest in our BloomCast NI™ platform and how we're combining satellite imagery, drone data, and AI-enabled forecasting to protect communities and ecosystems. It was a pleasure to meet stakeholders from Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), UK Space Agency, NI SPACE, and Strategic Investment Board in person to discuss the upcoming project and how we'll be working together over the next 8 months to deliver real-world environmental solutions. Thank you to Claire Young, Christopher McQuire, Robert Hill, and Joanne King for the productive discussions. Congratulations to fellow Phase 2 supplier Newcastle University and Maria Valasia Peppa - we look forward to collaborating as we advance these technologies from research concepts into operational tools. This £800,000 investment from the UK Space Agency demonstrates how space technology can deliver practical benefits where they're needed most. We're proud to be developing solutions that will make a tangible difference to Lough Neagh - protecting local communities, ecosystems, and livelihoods here in Northern Ireland. We're excited to continue turning world-class science into practical tools that make a real difference on the ground. 🌊 Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland continues to face significant environmental challenges. Recent coverage in The Guardian and the BBC News has highlighted the growing presence of blue-green algal blooms in the UK and Ireland’s largest freshwater lake, Lough Neagh. By August 2025, 139 detections were recorded — compared to 45 detections at the same point in 2024. Reports from The Guardian and the BBC describe 2025’s blooms as the worst recorded to date. Earlier this year, Planetixx had the opportunity to support Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA)’s efforts to better understand and address these issues through our algal bloom monitoring solution. We developed AI and satellite-data-driven tools that identified over 450 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡-𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐋𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐝 12-𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐦 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐬. This work will enable stakeholders to anticipate seasonal fluctuations, plan fisheries and recreational activities around predicted events, and develop stronger evidence-driven strategies to keep Lough Neagh’s waters safe. 🌊 Drop a note at [email protected] if you’d like to receive our case study on Lough Neagh or learn more about our algal bloom solutions. 🌊 Links to news articles in the comments. #LoughNeagh #WaterQuality #EnvironmentalInnovation #Sustainability #RemoteSensing #DataForGood #BlueGreenAlgae #AlgalBlooms #HarmfulAlgalBlooms #HABs #NorthernIreland #ClimateAction
