Imaginative thinking to rebuild Labour & the nation

About us

Progressive Britain is the new platform for policymaking, political education and imaginative thinking to rebuild Labour and the nation. Rooted in the Labour Party, we are dedicated to national renewal through the intellectual revitalisation of the UK centre-left. We work collaboratively with members of the Government and thought leaders to provide contemporary opinion pieces on key political, economic and social events occurring here in the UK and overseas. Our ongoing work brings together politicians, policymakers, experts, and activists together to shape Labour’s policy and strategy and develop distinctive and dynamic positions as they navigate their return to Number 10.

  • Today, alongside our partners at PPI, we hosted a private lunch for Parliamentarians to discuss the lessons for UK Labour from centre-left parties across the world from research undertaken in the UK, US, Germany and Australia. Expertly led by two Progress magazine authors, former Congressman Tim Ryan and Baroness Deborah Mattinson, attendees heard insights on PPI's new research on how we must evolve and grow as progressive centre-left parties to ensure that we win office and deliver for working people. Thank you to our MPs and AM Damien Egan, Alex Barros-Curtis, Luke Akehurst, Kirsty McNeill MP, Zubir Ahmed, Graeme Downie and Anne Clarke for attending and sharing how this key mission translates across your constituencies and the wider PLP. Another big thank you to our friends at PPI, Lindsay Lewis, Claire Ainsley, David Evans, Jolie LiBert, Ian O’Keefe and Stuart Malec for producing this research and sharing it with us all. It informed some vital discussions this afternoon that will undoubtedly continue as we cooperatively work towards an internationally strong and electable centre-left. • "What does Britain need to do to embed AI in public services?" That's the question that we posed to our roundtable attendees this morning in Parliament. Joined by Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for AI and Digital Government Feryal Clark, Parliamentarians from the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and Treasury team, Emily Darlington MP, Allison Gardner and Gordon McKee, as well as experts Polly Curtis, Tom Coates, Sara Veneziale, Paul Willmott, Grace Wyld, Jakob Mökander, Sam Robinson and Kenneth Benoit, we came together to discuss the potential of AI in helping the Government deliver on their key missions. With so much noise around AI adoption and integration across DSIT and the Government as a whole, it is vital that we keep the focus on the ultimate beneficiaries of this work - the end users of public services. Huge thank you to everyone who joined us this morning, we look forward to continuing our work around this vital topic as we see the Government's plans unfold.

  • It was a pleasure to host Progressive Britain’s quarterly Corporate Forum Dinner this week. We brought together leaders in business and key Labour parliamentarians to discuss the key questions to arise from the Spending review that came last week. Over the course of the evening, we discussed what growth means across different industries and how government can send clear signals to business that Britain is a great place to invest whilst also putting more money in the pockets of working people. The mood was decidedly optimistic with our parliamentarians expressing their pride over falling interest rates, increases in capital spending and investment across the UK, noting the importance of the Labour government seizing the political narrative and shouting loudly about their successes.  Interested in joining? Membership of our corporate forum includes four dinners annually, with a range of invitees that have previously included Darren Jones MP, James Murray MP, and Georgia Gould MP. • 💡NEW: Putting Industrial Policy in its Place.     Ahead of the Government’s Industrial Strategy, Progressive Britain's latest paper (in collaboration with FEPS and Community Union) discusses how we can use Industrial Strategy to bring places into the transitions facing our economies. Building on four case studies, steel in South Wales, critical minerals in Cornwall, semiconductors in Saxony, and green hydrogen in Pori, Finland, the paper argues that Place is lens through which industrial policy can redress historic regional inequality, and manage the big economic transitions that the climate crisis and rise of A.I present. https://lnkd.in/eufpipz4
