25 Years Since Hatfield: A Moment to Reflect   Today is the 25th anniversary of the Hatfield rail crash - a tragedy that claimed four lives and injured dozens more. The derailment on 17 October 2000 exposed critical gaps in asset knowledge and maintenance, and it changed the course of railway safety forever.   Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the families, friends, and colleagues of those who lost their lives, and with everyone affected by the events of that day.   The legacy of Hatfield is not just in the reforms that followed, but in the culture of vigilance and collaboration it helped foster. From rolling contact fatigue to asset integrity, the lessons have shaped how the rail industry manages risk and maintains its infrastructure today.   Mark Phillips, Chief Executive, RSSB:   “Today marks 25 years since the Hatfield rail accident — a defining moment in Britain’s railway history that continues to shape our collective approach to safety.   “It is particularly poignant for me, having travelled to the scene at the time to assist in managing the response while working in East Anglia. That experience has stayed with me and reinforces the importance of RSSB’s role as the industry’s independent technical and safety advisor.”
