We are creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.

About us

We solve complex nuclear, engineering, and infrastructure challenges for the UK. In operating, developing, and decommissioning the Sellafield nuclear site, we are delivering the largest restoration project in Europe. We are also delivering against national safety, security, and energy needs. In the past, we have been responsible for breakthroughs such as the world’s first full-scale commercial nuclear power station, and today we are helping to keep lights on across the UK by safely receiving and storing spent nuclear fuel from the UK’s fleet of power stations. Sellafield is the only site in the country that can safely manage all forms of nuclear waste, with our teams finding new ways to ensure it is kept safe until a permanent disposal facility is ready. We are also guardians of the UK’s largest stockpile of nuclear materials. Our world-class engineers and nuclear professionals tackle these challenges with the same spirit of innovation that has always run through our organisation. All our activities are driven by a single purpose: to create a clean and safe environment for future generations. We deliver on that purpose while providing value to: * Our people – helping them to grow, develop and flourish; * Our communities – creating a positive social impact in West Cumbria, Warrington and beyond * Our industry – supporting the nation’s nuclear infrastructure, completing our decommissioning mission, and shaping best-practice standards.

For this week’s #FutureFriday, we’re continuing our Windscale theme with a closer look at SPIDA - the Suspended Platform with Incremental Descent, developed through the ADAPT collaborative partnership. This machine is helping us tackle one of our most complex decommissioning challenges: the demolition of the Windscale Pile 1 chimney. But SPIDA isn’t just a machine. It’s a symbol of innovation, collaboration, and rigorous testing. With over 60,000 individual components, SPIDA is a feat of engineering. Designed to ‘walk’ down the chimney as it’s dismantled, this doughnut-shaped hydraulic platform will play a key role in safely reducing the height of the chimney barrel. Just up the road, out of public view, a full-scale replica chimney has been built. Here, teams from Sellafield Ltd and our ADAPT partners - including engineers, designers, and technical specialists - are trialling and testing every aspect of the SPIDA system. These trials are laying the groundwork for the future. Once testing is complete, SPIDA will be deployed on the Sellafield site - bringing cutting-edge innovation and collaborative expertise to bear on one of the UK’s most iconic nuclear structures. It’s a glimpse into how we’re shaping the future of decommissioning through smart engineering and partnership. Next week, we’ll be sharing a deeper dive into SPIDA’s development journey. Stay tuned to find out how collaboration and innovation are driving progress at Sellafield. 👷♀️🔧 #InnovationInDecommissioning #EngineeringExcellence #CollaborationInAction #ADAPT #SellafieldLtd #Windscale #Sellafield #Nuclear #Decommissioning #NuclearDecommissioning #FutureFocused #SPIDA #TestingAndTrialling #UKEngineering ADAPT- Orano Altrad Babcock Atkins Realis AtkinsRéalis Altrad Babcock Orano Limited

  • 🌟 Celebrating talent at Sellafield! 🌟 We’re proud to share that two of our colleagues, Omal Jayawardena and Rutendo Madhlambudzi, were honoured at the Young Generation Network (YGN) Annual Seminar in Edinburgh this week. A flagship event that brought together over 650 young professionals from across the nuclear industry. Omal, a strategy and technical advisor, received the YGN Excellence Prize for his outstanding contributions to innovation and mentoring. From launching the Young Generation International Network to leading the Innovate for Nuclear UK Competition, Omal continues to represent Sellafield Ltd and YGN on European platforms. Rutendo, a technical advisor, won the Chain Reaction Early Careers Competition with a creative and inspiring presentation aimed at future chemists. “I love creating content outside of work,” she shared. “I wanted to show that nuclear offers many paths for chemists beyond the lab — like nuclear medicine.” Alyson Armett, our strategy and planning director, spoke on the future of decommissioning at the event and our robotics team showcased cutting-edge innovations that are making work safer, faster, and more cost-effective on the Sellafield site. Looking ahead to 2026, our YGN leaders at Sellafield continue to shine: 👏Omal joins the European Nuclear Society YGN Board 👏Evie Smith becomes Vice-Chair of the YGN National Strategic Committee 👏Lucy Jarvis continues her role as Industry Liaison We’re proud to support and celebrate our colleagues who are making a difference. 👏 From left to right: Rutendo, Alyson, Evie, Lucy and Omal. #YGN #NuclearFuture #EarlyCareers #Innovation #Leadership #STEM #sellafieldLtd #nuclearskills #Sellafield #proudsellafield #nuclear Nuclear Institute Young Generation Network

Today the NDA group presented at a dedicated session of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy, focused on the UK’s decommissioning sector. Charlotte Nichols MP, Paul Vallance (NDA Group Chief Corporate Affairs Officer), Euan Hutton (Sellafield Ltd CEO), and Seth Kybird (Nuclear Waste Services CEO) highlighted the vital role decommissioning plays in the nuclear lifecycle, not as an end, but as an enabler of new nuclear. ✅ Decommissioning is not in decline. Our mission is growing, we're: • supporting 19,000 employees across the UK — 30% of the UK’s civil nuclear workforce. • underpinning the secure energy transition by managing spent fuel from EDF stations. • preparing for 8 future missions, including 7 EDF AGR sites and the MoD’s Vulcan site. • delivering major investment and long-term skilled jobs through the plutonium immobilisation programme at Sellafield. • advancing the Geological Disposal Facility (GDF), a 175-year programme creating 4,000 jobs in the first 25 years and 2,000 annually once operational. 💼 The NDA group economic impact includes: • £2.27bn spent with ~5,000 UK suppliers — 38% are SMEs. • Supporting 40,000 indirect jobs and reaching 83% of UK constituencies. • Investing £45m annually in early careers, with over 1,100 apprentices and graduates trained since 2005 — and 500+ joining in 2025.

Swipe to explore how our original purpose shaped the Sellafield site's evolution and the UK’s nuclear journey ➡️ Sellafield’s legacy began with a national mission: supporting the UK’s defence strategy through the production of nuclear materials for the atomic weapons programme. This work started in the late 1940s/early 1950s at Windscale - a pioneering collection of nuclear facilities that laid the foundation for decades of scientific advancement. That pioneering spirit continues, but today our brilliant people and supply chain partners have a different challenge – how do we safely decommission these legacy facilities? Keep your eyes peeled for our post tomorrow about how we are progressing with that mission.
