"My boss made me take a call at my nan’s funeral. I ended up taking notes on the bonnet of the funeral car.” This was our first submission to #badbossanonymous, and they ended up staying with that company for FIVE YEARS. Let's unpack how to handle this from a leader’s pov and an employee’s. Teammates, if you’ve ever had an experience like this, here’s how to guard your peace: ⏰ Name your boundary early: “I’ll be offline next Tuesday 11–3 for my nan’s funeral. Let’s make sure we get the brief across to Tom today.” ☎️ Bring a solution, not an apology: Life happens, you don’t need to apologise. Simply offer a delegate, record or move the call. Work ain’t life or death… But show you’ve thought ahead. 📤 Write it down: Paper trail paper trail paper trail! Drop a quick confirmation email: “Per our chat, I’ll be out 11–3.” 👥 Find your ally: One colleague backing up your boundary/ reminding the team can shift the whole dynamic. 🚨Know the signal to leave: If the line keeps moving, it isn’t a one-off — it’s the culture. Remember, that how you set a boundary teaches people how to treat you. LEADERS – be honest with yourself: do you still shoot off messages after 7 p.m. and expect a quick-fire reply, pull a team-mate back from approved leave more than once, and judge commitment by how long someone’s face stays lit by a screen? If any of these land, we need to talk. A leader’s playbook on what to do in this situation (straight from our workshop floor): 🟣 Plan coverage, not heroics: Real emergencies get a pre-agreed playbook. 🟣 Model the boundary: Tell your team when you’re offline and stick to it. 🟣 Reward the right things: Praise foresight and shared load, not last-minute martyrdom. At Seventh Wave we transform leaders who’ve drifted into crisis-as-routine. Think of us as the antidote to bad bosses: practical training, human-centred coaching, measurable change. If you’re ready to revolutionise your leadership style, let’s talk. Get in touch or just DM us on here, we’re listening, and we’ve got the tools. https://lnkd.in/eHqG_tCK Jancis Dunn Nick Booth Darren Booth Ron W. Bad Boss Anonymous – Story #1 “They made me take a client call at my nan’s funeral. I ended up taking notes on the bonnet of the funeral car.” 💀 No, this is not fake news. This is one of the first submissions we had to our Bad Boss Anonymous helpline this week. No one imagines "circling back" on a zoom call, when you're laying someone to rest. Pretty appalling, isn’t it? What kind of “leader” behaves like this? Well, this is a classic boundary-blind leader: 1. Crisis-as-routine mindset – every minor hiccup is escalated into a “drop-everything” emergency. 2. No regard for personal milestones – anything that isn’t business related is treated as insignificant and optional. 3. Power-over vs. team power – control is prized above empathy, trust or collaboration. 🤬 On Friday, we’ll dive into how to survive a leader like this and what to do if you recognise yourself in this story! Seventh Wave is the antidote to bad bosses. Get in touch to find out more about what we do. Never take a call at a funeral/ wedding/ birthday again… https://lnkd.in/eqHqCK-z 🗓️ Stay tuned each Wednesday for the next jaw-dropping tale from Bad Boss Anonymous. Not just the introduction now, but team building, sales, management, development, conflict resolution and so much more. There are 1,000+ ideas in my head that are making their way into further sessions that I know are going to add so much value and change the shape of the businesses I work with! What an incredible thing to be able to say. This model isn't just 'colours'. It's so much more, the depth is incredible and now I understand it fully, the possibilities feel endless. Open Google and start typing “Why is my boss…” and autocomplete paints a telling picture... Pretty damning stuff, isn't it? Everyone has had a bad boss, it's unfortunately just a part of life. At Seventh Wave, we're all about making damn good leaders, but have to admit that there's also a lot of the bad and the ugly too... What makes a bad boss, well bad? How do you change your behaviour if you recognise you might be one? And how do you handle it if you’re managed by one? This google search enquiry doesn't give you a particularly great sense of where people's workplace dynamics are heading, but it's also not totally surprising....when you remember that 75 % of people leave because of a leader, not the company! So, don’t leave it to Google, great leaders are made not god-given. Leave it in the hands of the experts at Seventh Wave. 🔗 Have a read of our article on "How to handle difficult people at work: https://lnkd.in/dyM5xpQk" Jancis Dunn Darren Booth Nick Booth Steve Kelly Ron W. Ever wondered how we got our name? 🌊 Find out from Nick Booth, one of our Directors on how it came to be. It is quite unusual and does require a bit of explanation.... Inspired by nature, the seventh wave is often the largest wave in a set. The company in its classic workshop training pack performs six workshops over six months, but the final or biggest wave aka the seventh wave is the impact after all of that is done, and these teams or individuals put what they’ve learnt into practice! Check out our full range of services here and how we can get your leadership team riding those waves in no time: https://lnkd.in/eqHqCK-z #Seventhwave #leadershiptraining Darren Booth Jancis Dunn Steve Kelly Ron W. With the fantastic group of SLT from Tornado Wire Ltd today for their Seventh Wave® - THE Management & Leadership Training Company workshop 5! 🤩 What’s that on the wall I hear you ask? 🤔 Well I’ll tell you … It’s the notes from hours and hours of purposeful, relevent, personal and focussed conversations on themeselves, their business, their thoughts and ideas. These notes are SO valuable. We keep these notes as they grow through the workshops and put them back in the wall to remind the group of their previous workshops than could be forgotten. It refocuses the group and gets their minds back in the room and most importantly back on themselves. On these pieces of paper are the answers to ‘almost’ every challenge they will face individually and collectively … invaluable! Say hello if you’d like to know how we can help your business scale too ☎️ #sweetsweerbeats
