From Leicester to the Space Telescope Science Institute: A grand tour of discovery We’re proud to celebrate Professor Leigh Fletcher, Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester, who’s been invited to deliver the 2025 European Space Agency - ESA Distinguished Lecture at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore on 30 October. Leigh’s lecture — “JWST as a New Voyager for Giant Planet Systems” — will showcase the University’s pioneering research using the James Webb Space Telescope (#JWST) to explore the outer planets of our Solar System. This marks a new chapter in Leicester’s journey of discovery, continuing our long legacy in planetary science — from Voyager to JWST, and beyond to JUICE, Europa Clipper, and future missions to Uranus. During his visit, Leigh will also share insights at NASA’s Goddard Spaceflight Center and the The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, connecting Leicester’s planetary science to global collaborations at the heart of space exploration. “JWST has opened new windows for discovery, probing wavelengths that were simply too dark and too faint for any previous observatory,” says Professor Fletcher. “It’s been an incredible few years of discovery — and we’re only just getting started.” 👉 https://lnkd.in/eH53Kg2r #SpaceParkCommunity #SpaceScience #JWST #PlanetaryScience #Leicester #ESA

Leicester science reveals how climate change is fuelling record-breaking wildfires across the Americas Wildfires in South America and Southern California were up to 30 times larger because of human-driven climate change — that’s one of the key findings from the State of Wildfires 2025 report, featuring research led by Dr Zhongwei Liu from the University of Leicester and Space Park Leicester. Dr Liu’s analysis shows that climate change has dramatically increased the likelihood of extreme fire events worldwide. Her work with the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) is helping to understand — and ultimately mitigate — the human and ecological toll of tomorrow’s wildfires. At Space Park Leicester, we’re harnessing space-enabled technologies and satellite data to support climate resilience across the globe. 📖 Read the full story on our website: https://lnkd.in/eJtDzzSx #SpaceParkCommunity #ClimateAction #Wildfires #EarthObservation #COP30
