About us

SSE Renewables is a leading developer and operator of renewable energy generation, headquartered in the UK and Ireland, with a growing presence internationally. Part of the FTSE-listed SSE plc, we're taking action as part of SSE's Net Zero Acceleration Programme (NZAP) to increase our installed renewable energy capacity to 9GW by 2027, and over 16GW by 2032. We have an operational portfolio of around 4.5GW of installed onshore wind, offshore wind and hydro generation capacity, with a secured future project pipeline of almost 15GW in development. We're also pursuing a further pipeline of over 13GW of additional prospective sites under development. Our operational portfolio comprises nearly 2GW of onshore wind capacity, more than 1GW of offshore wind capacity, and almost 1.5GW of flexible hydro power and pumped storage capacity. These generation assets produce around 10TWh of renewable power each year. We know offshore wind will be the backbone of a net zero power system so we are building the world's largest offshore wind farm, the 3.6GW Dogger Bank project in the North Sea and, in October 2023, we completed the world's deepest fixed-bottom offshore wind farm, the 1.1GW Seagreen project off the Scottish coast. We're a team of around 1,800 renewable energy professionals based across the UK and Ireland, Continental Europe, and Japan, all committed to delivering the green energy the world needs now and in the future. We've honed our skills through over 15 years of delivering world-leading projects with expertise in project design and optimisation, consenting and stakeholder engagement, financing, procurement, construction, and operations.

  • After lying undisturbed at the bottom of the North Sea for nearly 130 years, the bell of The Masonic — a 19th-century vessel lost in the Great Storm of 1893 — has finally returned home. 🔔   Discovered during subsea survey work for the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank Wind Farm, our joint venture with Equinor and Vårgrønn, the historic bell has been carefully restored and now takes pride of place at Brightlingsea Museum in Essex — just miles from where the vessel was originally built in 1876. ⚓   Working alongside maritime archaeologists, conservation specialists, and the team at Brightlingsea Museum, this project highlights how modern offshore development can uncover, protect, and celebrate our shared maritime heritage. 🌊   The restored bell was recently unveiled at Brightlingsea Museum, with descendants of Captain William Dove, one of The Masonic’s original owners, in attendance.   🔗 Click the link in the comments below to find out more.

  • We’re celebrating 75 years of renewable energy generation at Sloy Power Station, which was officially opened on 18 October 1950. 📆 Located of the banks of Loch Lomond, Sloy remains the UK’s largest conventional hydroelectric power station and a symbol of Scottish innovation, engineering excellence, and renewable ambition. 💧 With an installed capacity of 152.5 megawatts, Sloy generates around 130,000 megawatt-hours of clean electricity each year — enough to power approximately 48,000 homes an businesses. The station can reach full output in under five minutes, providing essential flexibility to the UK’s electricity grid. ⚡ Constructed between 1945 and 1950 under the Hydro Electric Development (Scotland) Act 1943, Sloy was a remarkable post-War engineering achievement. Seventy-five years on, Sloy continues to play a crucial role in delivering clean, reliable, and flexible renewable energy, supporting the UK’s transition to net zero. • 🔋 𝐕𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐮𝐧 𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢𝐫 𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐞, 𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐥𝐞.

  • Today, on #GlobalHydropowerDay 2025, we join organisations around the world in celebrating the vital role that hydropower plays in driving the global transition to Net Zero. Led by the International Hydropower Association (IHA), Global Hydropower Day recognises how hydropower supports communities, delivers clean and reliable energy, creates skilled jobs, and strengthens climate resilience. It’s a day to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future. At SSE plc, hydropower has been at the heart of our operations for decades. Our hydro portfolio totals 1,459MW of installed capacity, including 300MW of pumped storage and 750MW of flexible hydro, providing essential flexibility and reliability to the UK’s renewable energy system. This unrivalled fleet produces over 3TWh of renewable energy annually – enough to typically power over 1 million Scottish and UK homes each year. This year, the iconic Sloy Power Station on the banks of Loch Lomond marks its 75th anniversary — a remarkable legacy of engineering achievement. Sloy continues to play a key role daily in the production of flexible hydroelectric power for consumers. We’re also progressing with improvement works to repower Lochay Hydro Power Station. This £70m investment will further strengthen our operational hydro fleet and extend Lochay’s contribution to clean energy generation by at least another 40 years. We’re also setting the standard in future hydro development. Our proposed Coire Glas pumped storage hydro (PSH) project represents the next generation of sustainable innovation, winning the IHA Blue Planet Prize 2025 in the pumped storage category and becoming the first PSH project in the world to be Gold certified under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard. From Sloy’s historic past and the critical role it plays daily in the present to the pioneering standards Coire Glas is setting for hydro’s future, we’re continuing to lead through innovation, sustainability, and responsible growth — harnessing the power of water to deliver a cleaner energy future.
