🌍 𝗧𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗗𝗮𝘆 💚 And this week’s Friday Hot Topic couldn’t be more fitting as we’ve been talking about 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀. One teacher shared that their school has just started a wellbeing committee, asking what others are doing to support staff. The responses were full of small, powerful ideas that really make a difference 👇 🌿 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 • Reduce training around busy times like reports • Offer a wellbeing or “duvet” day each year • Keep policies workload friendly 🤝 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 • No micromanagement and genuine trust in staff • Flexibility for appointments and family events • Early finishes when the timetable allows ☕ 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 • Free coffee, staff breakfasts and a friendly staffroom • Access to counselling or wellbeing services • Staff fitness clubs and wellbeing buddies The message is clear: Supporting mental health in education isn’t about grand gestures. It’s about creating a culture of care, trust and balance where staff feel valued every day. 💚 This #WorldMentalHealthDay, let’s take a moment to check in with ourselves and with each other. Because a healthy, supported team is at the heart of every great school. #WorldMentalHealthDay #TeacherWellbeing #FridayHotTopic #SupplyDesk

🔥 Hot Topic This Week: “Could a 4-Day School Week Work?” A petition calling for the school week to be reduced from five to four days by making each school day one hour longer has gathered over 104,000 signatures. Teachers and school leaders are sharing their thoughts on the proposal to reduce the school week to four days, with slightly longer school days. Here’s what they’re saying: 🟢 Example 1: “Zero chance this will happen — who’s going to babysit the kids on the fifth day?” Many teachers point out that parents rely on schools for childcare. Removing a day could leave families scrambling, particularly for younger children in EYFS and KS1. 🟢 Example 2: “We’re teachers, not childcare providers. Childcare is an issue employers need to address.” Educators emphasise that schools exist to deliver learning, not to cover full-time childcare, and that a four-day week would shift responsibilities outside of the teaching role. 🟢 Example 3: “Primary school children can barely survive the normal school day. An extra hour would be hellish.” Extending the school day in younger years could impact attention spans, behaviour, and wellbeing — making longer days a real challenge for staff and pupils alike. 🟢 Example 4: “It would be amazing to have a day dedicated to sports, arts, or other creative activities, but it would need to be free and accessible for all students.” Teachers see potential for enrichment — drama, music, clubs, or sports — but only if it’s properly staffed and inclusive for all children. 🟢 Example 5: “Teachers are already vilified by the public. Any change that inconveniences parents could make things worse for staff morale and retention.” Even if a four-day week could improve workload, public pushback and parent expectations could make the idea very difficult to implement. 💬 Your turn: Could a four-day week work in your school, and what would need to be considered to make it successful? Share your experiences and ideas below
