Earlier this week the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) hosted a webinar on Stewardship for New Communities. Common themes were how to build community ownership from the outset and create value that would enable communities to thrive in the future. Some of the points that stood out for me:
🌱 Up front support for community associations with access to allotments and play spaces and early delivery of schools.
🕸️ Creating community endowments to secure long-term stewardship of public spaces and services.
🎨 Offsetting cost by building higher place value – considering value holistically not asset by asset.
🌍 Having early strategy/design for stewardship, see also as part of reducing whole life carbon.
👣 Future proofing being aware of need to address impacts of; inequality - aging – tech and to support better health.
Speakers discussed the role of legacy landowners in delivering longterm value, the role of community management trusts and community forums and the role of LPAs in hosting 'stewardship hubs’ backed by an SPD to establish stewardship standards and support local leadership.
Thanks to the Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) for hosting and ADAM Architecture Community Stewardship Solutions Homes and Communities Agency and The Land Trust for sharing your learning.
