Our inspiring colleagues are volunteering to support communities and improve wellbeing.  We’ve spoken with three team members who are proud of the volunteering work they do and the impact it has. Karen Watkinson, our Student Experience Team Leader, said supporting her team’s charity, @NHS charity Brighter Futures GWH, made her feel positive and happy. “I’m glad Unite Students is encouraging community involvement, and I hope to inspire others in my team to give it a try,” Karen said. Nixon Braithwaite, our Belonging Equity and Engagement Co-ordinator, supports Step Together Volunteering and Katrina Tumilty, Internal Audit Manager, volunteers at The Julian Trust Night Shelter. Our colleagues are encouraged to take at least one paid volunteering day a year. Ever wondered how student accommodation is refurbished? In some cases, we can turn around a full upgrade - including a new kitchen, refreshed bathroom, replaced carpet and a paint job – in just one day... while students are out at lectures. We're talking about the benefits of refurbishing our properties in our latest podcast, including how we can be more sustainable. We’re making great progress on our new Bristol property.  Here’s a sneak peak at Avon Point, which is being built on Feeder Road, right in the heart of one of the UK’s largest regeneration areas. Situated next to University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter campus, and close to Bristol Temple Meads, Avon Point is designed to support the next generation of students with high-quality living, social, and study spaces. ✅ The roof is on  ✅ External works are nearly complete  ✅ Bedrooms, kitchens, and communal areas are taking shape With a total development cost of £75million, Avon Point will feature:  🏋️♀️ On-site gym  📚 Dedicated study spaces  🤝 A direct partnership with University of Bristol - half of the rooms will be let to their students.   Opening for the 2025/26 academic year, this development is a key part of our mission to create inspiring spaces where students can thrive. We are thrilled to announce that we have been granted planning permission for the redevelopment of Newcastle University’s Castles Leazes student accommodation. The project, which is the first of its kind in the UK, is part of the joint venture with the university. It will create 2,000 new, purpose-built bedrooms at the landmark site in time for the start of the 2028/29 academic year. Joe Lister, our CEO, said: “This joint venture is the first of its kind and shows the significant opportunity Unite Students has to become the partner-of-choice for universities as they seek to unlock the potential of their campuses to deliver new accommodation and access new funding.” Demolition of the former site began in June 2024, and construction of the reimagined Castle Leazes is expected to commence from Autumn 2025.
