✨ This evening, the University of Nottingham is celebrating the pioneering people and teams turning world-class research into real-world impact. With representatives from across our vibrant spin-out community, we’re showcasing a diverse portfolio of nearly 40 spin-out companies spanning life sciences, deep tech, clean tech, AI and social enterprise. Opening the event, Professor Jane Norman, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Nottingham, highlighted how the university’s spin-outs – including an impressive 25 launched in the past seven years – are driving societal, environmental, and economic benefits. We were delighted to welcome inspiring presentations from: 🐮 Vet Vision AI (2023) – AI-driven 24-hour monitoring systems for animal welfare 👥 The Reverse Mentoring Practice (2021) – transforming workplace inclusivity through mentoring 🧬 Forge Genetics (2023) – pioneering proprietary gene-editing technology for biotech and pharma. Dr Craig Woods shared how Forge’s novel editing tool is already attracting investment, including a recent £2m raise from the Midlands Engine Investment Fund II via Mercia Ventures (announced today) 💡 Keep Energy Systems (2020, formerly Cheesecake Energy) – delivering long-duration energy storage for a cleaner future 🤝 Midlands Mindforge – an ambitious patient capital investment company, co-founded by eight research-intensive universities in the Midlands Guests also explored exhibits and connected with founders and executives – experiencing first-hand the incredible entrepreneurial talent emerging from Nottingham’s research base. Closing the evening, Niall O'loughlin, Director of Nottingham Technology Ventures and Director of Research and Innovation Strategy at the University of Nottingham, reflected on the collective journey of our spin-out community – celebrating the successes achieved so far, expressing gratitude to founders for sharing their stories, and recognising the collaborative spirit that continues to drive innovation forward. Today the University of Nottingham was proud to host a meeting of the STEP Strategic Collaboration Group, where regional leaders came together to deliberate how to best support a growing fusion industry across the region. The discussion with mayors, council leaders, and chief officers from across the East Midlands and Greater Lincolnshire highlighted how the region's universities can work hand in hand with local government and UKAEA to support the STEP Fusion programme at West Burton. As part of the visit, the SCG received tours of our leading, industry‑aligned research facilities including Omnifactory® and UoN Zero Carbon Innovation Centre, demonstrating the research power available here in the region. Fusion has the potential to deliver abundant clean power, secure our energy future, and drive economic growth. Backed by the government’s £2.5 billion investment, the sector is set to create thousands of jobs and generate global export opportunities worth trillions. At West Burton alone, an independent assessment projects 6,500 jobs – a transformative boost for Bassetlaw and the wider Midlands.
