From omens to extinction, PhD candidate Jessica Lloyd May (History, University of Nottingham) explores how eerie folklore surrounding Britain’s wildlife reveals our modern environmental responsibilities.🦔 In collaboration with Matthew Jones (PhD Candidate in Conservation and Biodiversity, Nottingham Trent University), their article shows how animals once seen as supernatural omens — hedgehogs, adders, wildcats, mountain hares, and nightjars — now face real threats. Hedgehogs were hunted as witches, adders symbolised death in Shakespearean lore, wildcats served as clan emblems, mountain hares were feared as shape-shifters, and nightjars were blamed for allegedly poisoning goats. Rooted in medieval manuscripts and oral traditions, these tales now remind us of the fragility of our natural world. Ever wondered why plant roots grow downwards? Our researchers, led by Dr Rahul A Bhosale have uncovered a key mechanism behind gravitropism, the process that allows roots to sense water and respond to gravity. The findings highlight how plants adapt to their environment and provide insight into the process, enabling the development of more drought-resistant crops. Successful applicants will undertake a paid, three-year period of research on Collaboratory’s fully funded Doctoral Training Programme, resulting in a PhD qualification. Successful Research Placement applicants will undertake a paid, part-time period of research, over 12 weeks, resulting in a formal Certificate of Recognition. ✨ Reflecting on an inspiring week! On Wednesday, we proudly celebrated the pioneering individuals and teams who are turning world-class research into ventures driving innovation, sustainability, and economic growth across the Midlands and beyond. Enterprise Excellence: A celebration of University of Nottingham spin-outs showcased the achievements of our thriving spin-out portfolio – now close to 40 active companies making an impact across diverse sectors. A new film following the life of Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson MBE is hitting screens on Friday and it features University of Nottingham research into the development of a wrist device that delivers electrical pulses to control tics. ‘I Swear’, which features Maxine Peake and Robert Aramayo in the leading roles, details John’s troubled teenage and early adult years growing up in the 1980s in Galashiels, a time when very little was known about the condition. In 2022 John took part in clinical trials of a wrist device developed by the University of Nottingham to control tics and this is played out in a scene in the film, showing Barbara Morera Maiquez, who was a researcher in the School of Psychology carrying out the trial in the lab. The scene shows John's powerful and emotional reaction to the device. The research is now being used by spin-out company Neupulse to develop a wrist device to be used in the home to control tics, with a product launch anticipated for next year.
