  • We’re proud to share that Vale Base Metals has been awarded C$500,000 from the Government of Ontario’s Critical Minerals Innovation Fund to support research for our next-generation carbonyl nickel refining technology at our Copper Cliff Refinery in Sudbury, Ontario. “Ontario is taking bold steps to secure our position as a global leader in critical minerals and electric vehicle manufacturing,” said the Hon. Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines. “This investment in Vale Base Metals backs cutting-edge refining right here in Sudbury, supporting Canadian workers.” Carbonyl-refined nickel, which was pioneered by Vale Base Metals, is used for the most demanding applications – from aerospace to defense to electronics. Our next-generation carbonyl reactor will strengthen our ability to process battery-recycled materials and alternative feedstocks. With support from the CMIF, this work reflects our shared commitment to advancing sustainable innovation in the critical minerals sector. “One of the things that has always set VBM apart is our innovative approach to mine processing and refining,” said Chris McCleave, Chief Technical Officer at VBM. “The carbonyl process is one of the most notable examples of this. We are grateful to the CMIF for their generous support as we take the carbonyl process to the next stage in its evolution.” Click the link to read the full story on our website: https://lnkd.in/eFQcfXiT #CriticalMinerals #ResponsibleMining

As the world continues to adopt new technologies, the role of critical minerals in powering a sustainable future is becoming increasingly clear.   This was a central theme at #LMEWeek2025, where industry, governments, and investors came together to explore the future of mining and investment. Vale Base Metals had a large presence with our leaders participating in several panels.      At Saudi Arabia's 'Minerals of the Future' event, our CEO Shaun Usmar shared how VBM and Saudi Arabia are both undergoing transformations to unlock the immense value of their respective mining portfolios and how VBM benefits from the experience of Manara Minerals.   Shaun also participated in a Wood Mackenzie panel event, highlighting copper’s vital role in electrification and the importance of building global supply chain resilience.    Additionally, VBM Director of Circularity, Christian Spano, participated in the Future Business Model of Mining panel organized by Goldman Sachs, where he explored how new business models—like circularity—are emerging to capture the residual value of materials already in the economy.   Rounding out the week, our Chief Commercial Officer Tina Gauthier participated in a panel, moderated by VBM's Head of Climate & Nature, Kirsten Hund, during the International Copper Association’s Industry Leader Forum. During the panel, Tina discussed how VBM is scaling copper production sustainably, safely, and responsibly to meet rising global demand.    As demand for critical minerals grows, VBM remains focused on unlocking the value of our endowment to deliver secure, reliable supply.   #CriticalMinerals #EnergyTransition #MiningMatters #VBM #LMEWeek

Our CEO, Shaun Usmar, joined Camilla Hodgson on stage in London for a keynote interview during the Financial Times Metals & Mining Summit. The wide-ranging conversation covered everything from progress in Vale Base Metals’ transformation into a lean, agile, cost competitive business to the outlook for nickel to consolidation in the mining sector. One key takeaway: the world is going to need more critical minerals as the energy transition progresses and technologies like artificial intelligence proliferate. VBM’s unique copper endowment in Brazil and vertically integrated portfolio of nickel and polymetallic assets set us apart. As demand for critical minerals rises, VBM will be there to provide mineral security to a rapidly transitioning world. Thank you to the Financial Times for organizing this important event. #CriticalMinerals #EnergyTransition #ValeBaseMetals

  • From the gleam of a skyscraper to the strength of a subway car, stainless steel shapes the modern world. And behind many stainless-steel grades is ferronickel - a key alloy that adds strength, corrosion resistance, and durability.   Vale Base Metals has been producing ferronickel (FeNi) at our Onça Puma site in Brazil since 2011, when the operation first began transforming lateritic nickel ore into high-quality ferronickel shots.   Now, with Furnace 2 officially online, we’re scaling up supply — adding 15 kilotons of annual capacity and positioning Onça Puma as Brazil’s largest ferronickel producer   Why ferronickel?   Because consistency matters. Our ferronickel is produced in shot form, with a typical nickel content of ~30%, low impurities, and ISO-certified quality. That means stainless steel producers get exactly what they need, every time.   Because performance matters. Our ferronickel delivers the strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability that stainless steel producers count on - helping their products perform in even the most demanding environments.   Because reliability matters. With shot sizes ranging from 5–50 mm, our product integrates seamlessly into stainless steel production, helping keep global supply chains running smoothly.   From Brazil to the world, we’re proud that our ferronickel helps build the infrastructure of today and tomorrow - reliably, sustainably, and at scale. 🔗 Learn more about Vale Base Metals ferronickel at the link below: https://lnkd.in/gnZcp8GM #FeNi #VBMNickel #StainlessSteel #Ferronickel #OncaPumaBrazil

We are pleased to share news of the successful startup of Furnace 2 at our Onça Puma Mining Complex in southeastern Pará, Brazil.   Furnace 2, the second nickel processing furnace at the complex, consolidates Onça Puma as the largest ferronickel operation in Brazil, adding 15 kilotons of nickel production capacity, bringing the operation to a nameplate production capacity of 40 ktpa.    “I want to acknowledge and thank Kilma Cunha and her team at Onça Puma, along with our partners for their dedication and excellence in delivering this project. This investment and successful delivery of the project further demonstrates VBM’s commitment to Pará and Brazil, while ensuring our world-class operations remain globally competitive,” said CEO Shaun Usmar. “We recognize the importance of consistently delivering on our commitments as a foundational principle to support the large investments in our copper growth ambitions in Brazil planned over the coming decade.”   We completed the Furnace 2 project on schedule and nearly 13 per cent below budget. There were no lost time injuries over the course of the three-year project.    Onça Puma is a key hub for employment and income generation in Pará, and a significant contributor to the region's socioeconomic development. VBM is proud and privileged to operate this world-class mining complex, and we look forward to growing our nickel and copper operations in Pará together with our community partners for many years to come.    Click here to read the full release: https://lnkd.in/eFgFnbkR Check out the video on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/e-YadbgU   #Nickel #CriticalMinerals #Brazil #Growth #ValeBaseMetals #OnçaPuma

  • At Vale Base Metals, we understand that how we mine is just as important as what we mine.   This week at #ClimateWeekNYC, our Chief Sustainability & Corporate Affairs Officer, Emily Olson, joined the S&P Global panel on Critical Minerals and Electrification in a Low-Carbon Marketplace, a timely conversation on the future of responsible mining.   Emily emphasized that scaling operations to meet growing demand for responsibly sourced critical minerals requires more than innovation—it requires excellence in social license. That is why we’re integrating sustainability into everything we do; this is a foundational piece to our business that drives value at every stage.   By collaborating across sectors and sharing best practices, we learn, gain valuable perspective, and improve our social and environmental performance.   Thank you to S&P's Matthieu Bardout for moderating, and to co-panelists Aurian de La Noue and Chloé Tacconi for a great discussion.    #ClimateWeekNYC #Sustainability #CriticalMinerals #ValeBaseMetals
