Young Rail Professionals (YRP)
Rail Transportation
We are here to develop, inspire, and promote young people in rail. Join us and build a network to unlock your career!
About us
The Professional Network for Young People in the Rail Industry Young Rail Professionals was founded in 2009 to bring together young people from across the global railway industry, starting with young members from across the UK’s railway related institutions. It has rapidly expanded, and continues to grow as young people join the industry and get involved with the YRP from both the UK, Europe and across the globe. As railways experience a great time of growth and investment, it is more important than ever that strong relationships across organisations are built, and best practice shared across the world through a vibrant, dynamic network, making the most of social media and tapping into the skills of rail’s young and enthusiastic employees. YRP organises networking events designed both to inspire and to entertain, with a now infamous annual Black Tie Dinner event, drawing hundreds of young professionals together for a great evening of networking and relationship development. YRP also runs an INTOrail programme, providing opportunities to its members to visit schools, colleges and universities to attract the next generation into this dynamic industry.

We’re incredibly grateful to CIRO | Chartered Institution of Railway Operators for giving some of the Young Rail Professionals (YRP) team the opportunity to attend the Rail Ops Conference 2025! A huge thank you to everyone who makes these experiences possible and to the organisers for crafting a platform where emerging talent can learn, connect, and grow today in Kings Place events space! We’re thrilled to hear from a lineup of industry experts and leaders across four core themes. However, we’re sad to share that CIRO’s CEO Philip Sherratt is unwell this week. Our thoughts are with Phil for a swift recovery. On a brighter note, COO Adam Fenton is handling the conference wonderfully, and we’re inspired by his steady leadership and the smooth execution in Phil’s stead. Today’s sessions had opening remarks from CIRO’s new chairman Mark Hopwood CBE and expertly compared by Rachel Heath FIRO FPWI Creating an Integrated Railway David Davidson FCIRO Tracey Messner Benjamin Rule Digital and Data Thomas Desmond Paul Plummer Claire Volding FCIRO Tony Osborne Devolved and Private Sector Maggie Simpson OBE Joanne Maguire Charlotte Whitfield Stuart Jones Developing the Operators of the Sector Chris Jackson FCIRO Rehana Marylebone Khawaja Bronnie Clarke The energy, insights, and forward-thinking discussions at the conference are fueling our team with fresh ideas on collaboration, innovation, and excellence in rail. We’re excited to bring these learnings back to our projects/work places and to continue building the future of rail together. If you’re at the conference, leave a comment below! 👇🏻 And a final shout-out to CIRO for supporting the next generation of rail professionals. Here’s to learning, growing, and driving progress — together. 🚄💡 #RailOpsConference2025 #YoungRailProfessionals #RailIndustry #DigitalRail #IntegratedRailway #RailOps #ThankYouCIRO #ProfessionalDevelopment #RailLeadership

After taking on the role of Deputy Operations Officer at Young Rail Professionals (YRP), the first region I visited was YRP West Midlands yesterday to see the amazing work my colleagues are doing for rail professionals there. We had a lovely reception by our kind host, WSP in the UK & Ireland. The tech talk on the importance of safety in design drawings, drawing on experience from the design of HS2, was insightful. Please check out their next event and recommend that university and college students attend the Innovation Jam event which the YRP West Midlands committee is organising at Aston University in Birmingham: https://lnkd.in/gpEQ5a9z #youngprofessionals #rail #yrp #westmidlands #birmingham
