Deep in the Scottish Highlands, we’re driving forward a major modernization project at Lochay hydropower plant together with our customer SSE plc Located near Killin, this plant has been supplying renewable energy since the 1950s, after a long service now it's time for an upgrade! To ensure long-term efficiency and reliability, both Francis units are undergoing a full refurbishment and upgrade to maximize their generation capacity. This includes a complete overhaul of the turbines, generators, and spherical valves, along with upgrades to the cooling water system, control system, and electrical protection. In addition, we are implementing a new excitation system and a state-of-the-art digital governor to further optimize performance. The project is progressing steadily: In our workshop, both the stator and rotor of the first unit have now successfully passed their Factory Acceptance Tests – a major milestone on the way to site installation. Key components are being delivered by our global Voith network, including sites in Tolosa, India, Tuzla, and Rutesheim. By fall 2025, installation works of the new equipment at project site commence – one step closer to a more efficient and reliable future #WithHydropower – stay tuned for more updates to come!

National Grid names contractors for £8bn substation drive National Grid has selected seven contractors for its £8bn Electricity Transmission Partnership. National Grid's 400kV Sandford substation, built as part of the Hinkley connection project Balfour Beatty plc, Burns & McDonnell, Linxon, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, M Group Energy, Murphy and OTW (a joint venture of Omexom and Taylor Woodrow) have been chosen to deliver £8bn worth of substation #infrastructure across #England and #Wales over the next five years for #NationalGrid. The Electricity Transmission Partnership (ETP) is a new way of working for National Grid, following on from the Great Grid Partnership it announced in May 2024. The initiative awards regional exclusivity of substation work to ETP contractors based on how well they perform and their commitment to expanding their capacity. The aim is to strengthen the UK supply chain, encourage long term investment and support the development of local skills and capability, National Grid said. Around 130 projects are expected to be procured through the ETP. It also marks a major boost to National Grid’s RIIO-T3 investment plan, which proposes up to £35bn investment in the transmission network in England and Wales over the five years to March 2031, including to build new substations or upgrade existing ones. Balfour Beatty has been allocated the northeast region, Morgan Sindall the northwest, Murphy southwest (region one) and London & southeast region, M Group Energy for southwest (region two) and OTW has the central west region The contractors will have first refusal of future substation work in the pipeline in their region. Two national suppliers, Linxon and Burns & McDonnell, will support delivery of substation work that falls outside the scope of the regional partners’ portfolios. The ETP complements other pioneering initiatives in National Grid’s evolving supply chain ecosystem, including the Great Grid Partnership (GGP) and a new high voltage direct current (HVDC) supply chain framework. Together, these programmes are designed to provide greater capacity and resilience across multiple infrastructure construction portfolios. National Grid said that the ETP model has the potential to be expanded beyond substations in future to include other network infrastructure. MultiSec Engineered Lifting Systems, supported by Durham Lifting, has produced the largest C-Hook ever manufactured in the UK. The bespoke lifting device was engineered for the SeAH Wind monopile factory and marks a major milestone for British manufacturing. A new £200M hydrogen production facility using residual waste is set to be built at the Tilbury Tax Site within the Thames Freeport. The project, delivered by Chinook Hydrogen and backed by Middle Eastern investors, aims to produce up to 12t of carbon-negative hydrogen a day for road transport and industrial use. The plant, which could be operational by 2028, will convert waste that would otherwise go to landfill into low-carbon hydrogen, cutting more than 50,000t of carbon dioxide emissions annually. It will also reduce methane emissions typically released from decomposing landfill waste, contributing further to climate goals. The facility’s innovative modular gasification technology has been designed to avoid major hazard regulations, streamlining its approval process. This investment marks the first phase of a broader £1bn plan to establish a national corridor of green hydrogen production sites across the UK’s road network. The corridor aims to support decarbonisation efforts for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), light goods vehicles (LGVs) and cars, facilitating the rollout of hydrogen refuelling stations and ultra-fast hydrogen chargers. A related project in Doncaster will develop a 5t-per-day hydrogen-from-waste facility, incorporating off-grid ultra-fast EV hydrogen superchargers. Chinook Hydrogen anticipates creating over 150 skilled jobs in engineering, logistics, operations and clean technology, offering a boost to local employment at the Tilbury and Doncaster sites. The move aligns with government strategies to foster clean industrial growth while reducing reliance on fossil fuels in freight and transport sectors, which remain significant sources of UK emissions. As the UK pushes towards its legally binding target of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, developing a domestic hydrogen production capacity is seen as vital for heavy transport and industry – sectors that are harder to electrify fully. We’ve just published the results of our six-month trial with Utonomy Ltd, demonstrating how smart pressure management can deliver measurable methane emissions reductions across our gas network. Using AI-powered controls, we achieved a projected 16% cut in methane leakage and safely reduced governor pressures by up to 31%.
