AI has a product problem. Not a model problem. Models are making capability leaps every few weeks but AI-native product innovation hasn’t kept up. Most products are forcing AI into existing UX patterns rather than rethinking an AI-native experience from first principles. Parallels to early mobile (2007-2010) - for years, mobile meant shrinking your website into your phone until Uber reimagined transportation. To be clear, there are lots of amazing AI-first products. See NotebookLM, Lovable, Stitch, Flow. But the pace of innovation on models has been faster, for a lot of reasons which I will explore in future posts.

Traditional product roles won't exist in 10 years. Here's what replaces them. Most teams are still thinking in outdated role definitions while AI-powered companies are building with skill-based teams that can ship faster than ever. — After interviewing Julie Zhuo (Former Facebook VP and Founder of Sundial), I've identified the 5 principles that separate traditional product leadership from AI-era success. Here's what changes everything: 1. Skills beat role identity every time Traditional thinking: "I'm a PM" or "I'm a designer" with defined responsibilities. AI reality: Think about specific skills you bring that are better than AI, then use AI to augment areas where you're weaker. Your value comes from unique capabilities, not job titles. 2. Taste becomes your competitive moat When AI can do many things at 70-80th percentile, recognizing exceptional vs average work becomes critical. If you can't tell the difference, you'll only achieve what AI does on average. Develop your eye by studying the absolute best in each discipline. 3. The three management levers never change People, process, and purpose remain core regardless of AI advancement. AI agents fit into the "people" lever - you still choose tools, set processes, and define purposes. Master these fundamentals, then layer AI on top. 4. Experimentation beats rigid playbooks This isn't a time for following established frameworks. Try new team structures. Can two people build what used to take six? Frame everything as experiments with measurable learnings. Iterate your way to what works in the AI era. 5. Human elements become more valuable The joy of creation, learning processes, and meaning from building things you're proud of can't be automated.
