SAP SD Logistics Process Simplified: Picking, Packing & PGI – Explained the Easy Way Today, let’s break down three important steps in SAP SD – Picking, Packing, and PGI (Post Goods Issue) – in the simplest way possible. Imagine you run a company that sells smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and fitness bands. Your warehouse is busy fulfilling daily orders. Now what happens when a customer places an order? This is where SAP’s Logistics Execution process begins. Let’s walk through it step-by-step: 1. Picking – Selecting the Right Items Once the delivery document is created, the warehouse team needs to pick the actual products from their storage location.     Think of this like: “Go to Bin A3 and pick 10 units of wireless earbuds.”     In SAP, this ensures the system knows exactly what’s been removed from inventory and from where.     To register this action in SAP, the picking quantity is updated in the delivery document.    2. Packing – Getting Goods Ready to Ship       Next, the picked items are packed into boxes or cartons.       Why is this important? Because packing information is essential for transport, tracking, and even legal documents like export invoices.       You can pack items manually or use packing instructions.       If handling units (like pallets or containers) are used, SAP creates tracking IDs for them too.    3. PGI – Post Goods Issue       Now comes the critical step – Post Goods Issue.       This is when the ownership of goods officially moves from your company to the customer.       In SAP, PGI does two key things:     - Reduces stock from your inventory - Posts accounting entries (like COGS and inventory movement)       You cannot invoice the customer without completing PGI. It's the final green signal from logistics to finance.    Let’s recap with a real-world example: Sales Order is created for 50 smartwatches. Picking: Warehouse picks them from Storage Bin B2. Packing: They are packed into 2 cartons with a label. PGI: Stock is reduced, and the customer is now the official owner. Each step ensures accuracy, traceability, and proper handoff between teams — from warehouse to billing. Hope this helped simplify the process. SAP hiring story in India. Look at the desperate hiring situation SAP clients, SAP SIs and SAP hiring vendors are in, at the moment. To hire cheap and save money, 👉 They have brought down the senioroty level of experience, to mid level 👉 They have started hiring juniors and pushing them to deliver results at a senior level 👉 They are dropped to the level of hiring freshers and expecting them to deliver 👉 They have started looking for end users and the idea is to train them as consultants 👉 They are scheduling walkin drives, to attract mass numbers 👉 They are working on remote roles with payments on credit period All the above ideas will fail, as the intentions are not genuine. There is no shortcut to success and clients and their partners will reap the benefits soon 😜. Anyone familiar with SAP BW knows the value of customer exit variables – dynamic defaults like the current posting month or the last fiscal year. Now, SAP Datasphere brings a modern equivalent to the cloud: Dynamic Default Variables – completing the concept already introduced with Derived Variables. Unlike “Derived Variables,” which set values invisibly, Dynamic Defaults provide prefilled suggestions – visible, editable, but already correct most of the time. Typical example: yesterday’s date as default, calculated via the standard SAP.TIME.VIEW_DIMENSION_DAY table. Or, even more powerful: dynamically setting the approved plan version for each sales manager. With #NextTables maintaining control tables and the SESSION_CONTEXT function linking the logged-in user, every manager sees their right plan version automatically. Technically simple – just SQL views plus lookup entities – yet highly effective: less manual input, more consistency, and stronger self-service. True, BW’s ABAP-based exits still cover more edge cases, with many predefined variables like current year + offset. But in Datasphere, dynamic filtering at the view level and reusable lookup entities already solve most needs. Bottom line: Dynamic Defaults are a usability boost that makes analysis smarter, faster and more flexible.
