🇳🇬 🇺🇸Nigerian fintech Paga Group Ltd, a Flourish portfolio company, has launched U.S. digital bank accounts for the African diaspora, furthering its partnership with Visa and beginning one with Regent Bank. This isn’t just another remittance app. Partnering with a regulated U.S. bank, Paga now offers FDIC-insured accounts, Visa debit cards, and integrations with Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Plaid — all designed to make it easier for Africans in the U.S. to bank in dollars and send money home seamlessly. The African diaspora in the U.S. is over 4.5 million strong and growing, with billions in annual remittances. Traditional banking and remittance services often leave these communities underserved. We’ve seen many regional fintechs expand from their home markets outward, but Paga’s move is notable for being about cross-border banking rather than just payments. By bridging U.S. financial infrastructure with African wallets, Paga is showing how fintechs can turn diaspora flows into full-service cross-border banking. 💡 Fireside Reflections: Building VC Relationships & Backing African Founders In May, I had the privilege of attending a thought-provoking Dream VC fireside chat with Dayo Koleowo (Microtraction) and Uwem U. (Launch Africa Ventures). The conversation revolved around early-stage investing across African markets. It was grounded, practical, and deeply inspiring. Here are some of the reflections that stuck with me: 🌍 Local context matters: Most VC capital still flows into Anglophone markets, but there’s growing interest in Francophone Africa. Expanding regionally demands local knowledge, networks, and a portfolio construction strategy that is both diverse across sectors and capital-efficient. 👥 Founder assessment is everything: The best founders aren’t only technically strong but they are coachable, communicative, and deeply insightful about their markets. As Uwem U. said, “If I talk to a founder and don’t learn anything new about the industry, that’s a red flag.” 💥 Backing female founders requires intentionality: Open calls often yield 90% male applicants. Funds need to go out of their way to find, support, and mentor female founders - investors could play a key role in that ecosystem shift. Uwem U.’s goal is to have a portfolio that consists of 35% female founders. An objective that would be reached not by chance but by design and deliberate effort. ⚠️ Crisis management isn’t optional: From founder conflicts to cash crunches, VCs must document everything, stay objective, and build trust early. Founders need to know they can be vulnerable without judgment. 🤝 Relationships are the real currency: Whether it’s media, co-investors, or accelerators - relationships drive access, insight, and deal flow. “Be helpful, even to those you don’t invest in.” Dream VC continues to provide these rich learning moments that push us to think bigger, act more intentionally, and back the right people - not only ideas. #VentureCapital #AfricanStartups #FemaleFounders #DreamVC #InvestingInAfrica #FoundersFirst #EarlyStageInvesting
