When I first came up with the topic for this report, I wasn’t exactly pumped. Some people love it, but for me - data governance has always been a bit of a snoozefest. But the more I researched, debated, and wrote, the more I realised this may just be the fundamental problem at the heart of GIS. For most spatial data, governance isn’t built in - it’s clunky, slow, often an afterthought. I’ve seen even the most governance-minded orgs fall back on spreadsheets to track data records. Good governance should be seamless, built-in and accessible - a thing of intrinsic value, not a lead weight. This matters more than ever, as AI transforms geospatial analysis and we can’t rely on humans to hand-hold with governance caveats at every step. Recently, I was discussing the benefits of data storytelling with a client. Most people see narrative as something that benefits the audience. It makes your data communications: ✅ 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐠 – captures attention and holds it. ✅ 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 – adds emotive pull so your evidence resonates. ✅ 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 – clarifies the “so what” and “now what.” But what often gets overlooked is how much narrative also helps the presenter. It helps you stay: ✅ 𝐅𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 – you know the key insight you’re driving toward. ✅ 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝 – you filter out noise and avoid overwhelming detail. ✅ 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 – you know what matters and speak with conviction. We often think of narrative as a way to guide others through the numbers. But in reality, it’s also guiding you, refining what you share. That’s the hidden win. Narrative doesn’t just make your audience’s experience better. It makes your data communications cleaner and sharper. I’ve been in business for nine years this month. Here are nine (of the many) things I’ve learnt about data storytelling: 1. As sexy as data visualisation sounds, we’re now saturated in data visuals that are too easy to ignore. 2. The audience decides what works, not me. 3. The hard part isn’t finding numbers, it’s understanding what matters. 4. Without context, data is too easy to misread. 5. The same dataset can tell multiple truths, depending on the lens. 6. People repeat the story back, not the numbers. 7. The majority of people who want to tell data stories don’t, because it’s hard. 8. Data analysts have more power and influence than they realise. 9.
