Diabetes affects millions in the UK – and health inequities continue to shape people’s experiences and outcomes. We believe that research can, and should play a vital role in making changes. In alignment with our new strategy, we are committed to fund more research that helps tackle real-world inequities. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be a major health burden, particularly in communities experiencing higher levels of deprivation. Community pharmacies are ideally placed to address the health inequalities seen in cardiovascular diseases. They are accessible and often walkable for around 90% of the population. To harness this potential we are working with Barts Health NHS Trust ELoPE East London Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Community Pharmacy NEL, NHS North East London and HEART UK - The Cholesterol Charity to pilot a new rapid lipid testing service in community pharmacies. Pathfinder sites have started to prescribe lipid lowering therapy creating a pathway from testing to prescribing and contributing to the NHS 10-year plan. The test takes just seven minutes, providing a full lipid breakdown and calculates a person’s risk of developing a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years. This test is currently being rolled out in pharmacies in North East and North Central London. Our new report, looking into rare kidney diseases in the UK, has uncovered shocking statistics in diagnosis delays, inconsistent care, and long waits for new treatments, with the impact being more severe for children. Rare kidney diseases include over 150 distinct diseases that, while individually uncommon, are estimated to collectively affect around 160,000 people in the UK. Following our findings, we are calling on government to deliver faster diagnosis, ensure children can be included in clinical trials, and commit investment into research and services so families are no longer left behind. Sandra Currie OBE, chief executive of Kidney Research UK, said: “This report provides the first real insight into the significant impact of rare kidney diseases and, importantly, lays out a clear path for action. Our Trust has increased the number of patients having their regular dialysis at home rather than having to travel to a Dialysis Unit. NNUH now ranks 2nd in the UK for the proportion of patients starting their treatment at home. Matt Todd, Consultant Nephrologist, said: “Patients with end-stage kidney disease require some form of renal replacement therapy to stay alive. While for many the preferred treatment would be a transplant, this is not possible for some, and in most other cases there is a significant wait to receive a transplant. “Instead, most end-stage kidney patients therefore rely on regular dialysis treatment as a lifeline. While dialysis is vital to keep people alive and well, it has a significant impact on their day-to-day lives. “Patients must often travel from across Norfolk & Waveney to their dialysis unit, wait to start their treatment, wait at the end of their treatment, and travel home. These treatments happen three times per week, for three and a half hour sessions. “Some people also feel very washed out and tired after their dialysis. For many, this effectively knocks out three days of their week, every week, hugely reducing the time they have to live a normal life. “The option of home dialysis offers patients more flexibility, more independence, and a better quality of life. Patients, carers, partners and family members are trained and supported by the Renal team throughout their time on dialysis. “The two main treatments we provide at home are with a home haemodialysis machine, or with a different treatment called Peritoneal Dialysis. Our Trust offers both treatments to our patients through the Renal Home Therapies Team at the Norfolk & Norwich Kidney Centre. Matt added, “Our team has been working hard to increase the proportion of patients having their dialysis at home. This is part of the nationwide DAYLife project supported by the UK Kidney Association, and in line with NHS goals to treat more people nearer home.” “In July the UK Renal Registry published the UK-wide data for 2023. This shows that the NNUH had more than one third of new dialysis patients starting their treatment at home, nearly double the UK average. This placed us second out of all renal units nationwide.” “This positive trend is a direct result of everyone's commitment, from the efforts of the Low Clearance Clinic to the Renal Home Therapies Team, to the broader work of the whole Renal service. Clinical trials contribute £7.4 billion annually to the UK economy, supporting 65,000 jobs and generating £1.2 billion of revenue for the NHS. Throughout the past year, we've worked to further maximize this value through initiatives to accelerate clinical trial delivery and embed research culture across health and social care. We work with partners and key stakeholders in the UK Clinical Research Delivery programme to achieve the common aim of creating a faster, more efficient, more accessible and more innovative clinical research delivery system – making the UK a world leader in clinical trials. Last month, we marked an exciting milestone for the #CancerEquals campaign, holding the first Cancer Equals Coalition meeting in London. Our coalition of experts analysed findings from the ‘1,000 voices, not 1’ report and worked together to identify areas of unmet need. We also generated new ideas to help tackle the issue of #HealthLiteracy, with the aim of increasing earlier cancer diagnosis. Key insights from the coalition meeting included: 💠 The significance of community-based solutions, partnering with local trusted figures to co-create and ensure effective communication. 💠 The value of clear and accessible communication, which is culturally appropriate and in diverse languages, for messages to be easily understood by all communities and help build trust in the health system. 💠 The role and real-life applications of digital tools such as AI in healthcare and in helping design solutions for patients. 💠 The importance of engaging cross-functional and system-wide key stakeholders in designing effective solutions.
