Financing Nature is one of the most useful podcasts for my work. In particular, Emily McKenzie's episode explain how the Task Force on Nature Related Disclosures works and is leading to more and more useful action by corporations on behalf of nature; and Elizabeth Beall of Finance Earth speaking about the operations of a fisheries improvement fund. The world is increasingly full of examples of blended private-public activity on behalf of nature, much of which has economic returns tied to it. I had the chance to talk about how US government policies have led to one of the largest, profitable nature investment markets in the world - mitigation and wildlife banks. Thousands of sites have been restored and protected. They are run by for profit and nonprofit organizations. They count toward protected lands goals across the country. For anyone following global climate action - the COP30 Presidency letters are essential reading.   If you are new to the process, these letters are the Presidency’s way of setting out priorities, sharing progress updates - and guiding negotiators, policymakers, and observers on the road to the summit.   They’re like a "state of play” for the UN climate talks.   So far the Brazil Presidency have shared 6 of these. With each a helpful, plain-language snapshot of where we are, what’s at stake, and where we’re headed.   The 6th letter was released just this week. Delighted that WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development worked with Mark Manning and the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group on “A practical guide on transition plan dependencies”. Also much valued contributions from the European Commission Joint Research Centre The paper highlights the dependencies that ensure transition plans are impactful. Think of such dependencies as technology, infrastructure, consumers, value chains, and policy. The paper offers a framework, tools, and case studies. I wrote up for Climate Home News why #COP30 needs a cover decision. In Short: COP30’s credibility rests on how it confronts this ambition gap. Attempts to spin COP30 as a success without such a response seem hollow. If COP30 must respond to this ambition gap, a cover decision emerges as the most credible path forward. The COP30 Brazil presidency would be well advised to pursue one. 🚨 NEW PUBLICATION: "Building in Flexibility: Key Considerations for the #PlasticsTreaty" ✅  Flexibility mechanisms encourage broad adoption by differently situated States while, ideally, not undermining the goal of the treaty. ✅ Flexibility related to art. 3 substantive obligations on plastic products and Chemicals can be embedded through both general and specific exemptions. The Chair’s text does not, however, currently include general exclusions or exemptions, which could be a way to include additional flexibility into the treaty text. ✅ Mandatory Obligations with Different Timelines for Implementation. ❌  Reservations: Including a provision to permit parties to make reservations is not recommended because, upon ratification, any party may decide to register a reservation to any article. ❌ Excluding or Shielding Parties from Particular Obligations ✅ ❌ Alternate Control Measures ✅ ❌ Optional Annexes and Protocols DYK that: 1️⃣ Opt-out provisions are much more common than opt-in provisions? 2️⃣ Marpol: Although called annexes, MARPOL’s four optional annexes function in some similar ways to protocols, notably in that they have certain requirements before the annex enters into force.  3️⃣ Acceptable purposes differ from specific exemptions in that a party may register its acceptable purpose of Annex B POPs (currently DDT and PFOS) at any time. 4️⃣ An approach similar to that under the Stockholm Convention could be pursued under the Plastics Treaty, particularly if some products and chemicals are phased out entirely, while others are reduced.
