Diabetes affects millions in the UK – and health inequities continue to shape people’s experiences and outcomes. We believe that research can, and should play a vital role in making changes. In alignment with our new strategy, we are committed to fund more research that helps tackle real-world inequities. Our new report, looking into rare kidney diseases in the UK, has uncovered shocking statistics in diagnosis delays, inconsistent care, and long waits for new treatments, with the impact being more severe for children. Rare kidney diseases include over 150 distinct diseases that, while individually uncommon, are estimated to collectively affect around 160,000 people in the UK. Following our findings, we are calling on government to deliver faster diagnosis, ensure children can be included in clinical trials, and commit investment into research and services so families are no longer left behind. Sandra Currie OBE, chief executive of Kidney Research UK, said: “This report provides the first real insight into the significant impact of rare kidney diseases and, importantly, lays out a clear path for action. Today we’re pleased to share our Clinical Academics Summit statement, signed by over 40 organisations 🤝 An alarming decline in clinical academic posts threatens the UK’s ability to develop new treatments and remain a global leader in health research ⚠️ Clinical academics are vital in connecting research and patient care – shaping research priorities through frontline experience and bringing new scientific discoveries straight to patients 🧑‍⚕️ ✨ Earlier this year, we convened leaders from universities, research funders, industry partners, the NHS and Government at a summit to commit to action to help reverse this trend. The statement of ambition and intent seeks to address the OSCHR reports’ recommendation to increase the number of permanent clinical academic posts, year-on-year. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to be a major health burden, particularly in communities experiencing higher levels of deprivation. Community pharmacies are ideally placed to address the health inequalities seen in cardiovascular diseases. They are accessible and often walkable for around 90% of the population. To harness this potential we are working with Barts Health NHS Trust ELoPE East London Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Community Pharmacy NEL, NHS North East London and HEART UK - The Cholesterol Charity to pilot a new rapid lipid testing service in community pharmacies. Pathfinder sites have started to prescribe lipid lowering therapy creating a pathway from testing to prescribing and contributing to the NHS 10-year plan. The test takes just seven minutes, providing a full lipid breakdown and calculates a person’s risk of developing a heart attack or stroke over the next 10 years. This test is currently being rolled out in pharmacies in North East and North Central London.
