Shopify’s latest update could break your tracking (And your ROAS) Most eCommerce brands don’t realise how fragile their tracking setup actually is. And Shopify’s latest move is about to expose that. Here’s what’s changing: Script Tags, checkout.liquid, and Additional Scripts on your Thank You and Order Status pages are being deprecated. From 28 August 2025 (Plus stores) and 26 August 2026 (non-Plus), these legacy tracking scripts will stop working completely. For any store still using the old approach, here’s what happens: ❌ Purchase events stop firing ❌ Retargeting audiences vanish ❌ Attribution data goes dark And when platforms like Google, Meta, or Microsoft can’t see sales… the algorithm stops optimising. Your campaigns look broken, and ROAS collapses almost overnight. Migrate to Checkout Extensibility and rebuild tracking with Customer Event pixels. It’s the only way to protect purchase tracking going forward. This isn’t a minor patch. 🚨 Why companies waste money on paid ads & they don’t even realise it! That’s not scare tactics – it’s a consent tracking issue. We’ve audited dozens of sites over the past year. You’d be amazed how many haven’t properly implemented Consent Mode for Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, or Meta. No Consent Mode = ❌ No tracking for users who click ‘Reject all’ ❌ No enhanced conversions ❌ Incomplete or missing data in GA4 ❌ Wasted ad spend you can’t justify And here’s a common misconception: Blocking GTM until consent is granted isn’t enough. Unless your individual tags are configured to respect consent signals, they may still fire — and you’re not compliant. Even worse – many brands think they’re compliant because they’ve got a cookie banner. But: ⚠️ Consent Mode isn’t automatically wired in. Especially when tags are manually added or use old GTM setups. ⚠️ According to the ICO, your banner must give equal prominence to ‘Accept’ and ‘Reject’. You can’t bury the reject option on a second layer. And if you haven’t implemented Consent Mode v2 by now, your data could already be non-compliant — and broken. ✅ Paid traffic showing as ‘Direct’ ✅ Retargeting audiences shrinking ✅ ROAS metrics unreliable ✅ Data loss due to cookieless users (e.g. Safari Incognito) This isn’t just a privacy issue — it’s a data and performance issue. "SEO is dead" We are still doing the same fundamentals we were doing 12 months ago. The only difference is a slightly greater focus on PDP pages and merchant feed optimisations. Bundling isn’t just for AOV - it’s a taxonomy opportunity We often see this with Shopify stores that have grown over time. New products are added, old ones are archived, categories shift, and before long the catalogue reflects how things are stocked or supplied - not how customers actually buy. One of the clearest examples is bundling. It’s often seen purely as a conversion tactic, something to lift AOV or cross-sell stock. But there’s a more strategic opportunity here. In a lot of cases, customers aren’t thinking in single products or tight categories. They’re thinking in routines. A morning skincare set. A weekend travel kit. A wind-down ritual at home. These use cases span categories, but they make immediate sense to the customer. When you structure bundles around that kind of intent - and treat them as part of your taxonomy, not just promotions - you open up new routes into the catalogue. You make discovery easier. You create clearer signals about what your brand is for, not just what it sells. For large catalogues especially, this kind of framing can bring focus to what otherwise feels like a long list of options. And the lift isn’t just commercial, it helps with content, with SEO, and with shaping the overall customer experience.
