🚨 NEW funding opportunity to conduct research in nature-based engineering - one of the eight technological challenges identified in the Tomorrow’s Engineering Research Challenges (TERC) report. This opportunity aims to support interdisciplinary, engineering-led research to develop systems and technologies inspired by nature. This includes using engineering to enhance existing natural solutions, harness the benefits of nature-derived technologies, or create new engineering solutions that mimic natural processes. 🔓 We’re unlocking £1m funding to accelerate metamaterials innovation Today, Royce is announcing £1 million which will support metamaterials scale-up projects. The funding will be delivered through our Industrial Collaboration Programme and grants will foster new partnerships between academia, industry, and RTOs, enabling faster deployment of cutting-edge metamaterials enabled technologies across sectors like: 🔋Energy 🦿Healthcare 💻 ICT 🚀Aerospace Building on a number of major UK Research and Innovation investments, this funding will supercharge translational research and demonstrate how the field can deliver against key national priorities, including those laid out in the National Materials Innovation Strategy and the UK Government’s Plan for Change. #SolvedWithYork 🔬 Our Nanocentre is a world-class centre for in-situ and environmental aberration corrected electron imaging and spectroscopy, making significant strides in materials research. The arrival of a new, state of the art JEOL 200F NeoARM AC-STEM, funded with the support of an EPSRC Strategic Equipment grant, will allow us to expand our unique "gas in the microscope" capabilities, extending atomic resolution imaging and spectroscopy under controlled environmental conditions. This represents a major leap forward for research at York and for our collaborators in academia and industry. This project is led by Dr Peter O'Toole, Professor Vlado Lazarov, and Paul Gunning. The goal is to leverage the unused capacity of our high-end instruments and create a dedicated commercial facility to attract and support industrial clients. After a 5-month period of embargo, I'm delighted to now share with you the updated UK Fusion Materials Roadmap. The first UK Fusion Materials Roadmap, released in 2021, was incredibly successful in educating non-fusion researchers, allowing them to see where their skills and expertise could be applied to solve fusion related material challenges. This led to a significant increase in fusion materials research and progress made in solving some of the challenges identified in 2021.   Based on this progress, recent global advances in fusion energy, and a need for further collaborative research, an update to the first roadmap was required. Throughout 2024 and early 2025, facilitated by UK Atomic Energy Authority and co-funded by the Henry Royce Institute and EPSRC, a wide range of fusion materials experts from academia, industry and national labs came together via online and in person workshops to describe the material science and engineering challenges still to be solved for commercial fusion in the UK to become a reality. The narrative these experts created included descriptions of the facilities, capabilities and skills required to help solve these challenges, as well as identifying cross-cutting themes common to all of the challenges identified. A group of leading UK-based fusion materials researchers collated this information and, with the help of an editorial board comprising experts from within and external to fusion, created a document communicating the nature and scale of these challenges and offering potential solutions via further collaborative research and accessing and developing capabilities at national user facilities.   A key message I'd like to convey is that many of these challenges have synergies in fission, aerospace, defence, and beyond, and I hope that this document is accessible to those of you not yet working in fusion, leading to an increase in connectivity across sectors.   The information contained in the roadmap was correct at the time of completion in April 2025. Since then there have been even further advances in fusion, including the UK government's announcement of a record breaking £2.5 billion investment into UK fusion research over the next 5 years.   I want to give my heartfelt gratitude to all of those involved in updating this roadmap, including the research area leads Susannah Speller, Greg Brittles, Simon Chislett-McDonald, Samuel Humphry-Baker, Max Rigby-Bell, Samuel Murphy, Hazel Gardner, Philip Edmondson, Enrique Jimenez-Melero, Benjamin Evans, Simon Middleburgh, Liberato Volpe, Megan Leyland, Chris Race, Chris Hardie, Tom Sellers, Thomas P.
