It’s Pension Awareness Week followed by UK Savings Week. We’ve partnered with the Pensions Management Institute (PMI) on the Lifetime Savings Initiative to explore the links between pensions and savings. We believe it’s time for a rethink. Our report urges the creation of a national short-term savings plan and a national lifetime savings plan to integrate retirement and non-retirement savings, with early access for first-time homebuyers. In a new joint podcast, we and the FCA explain why pension professionals should take proactive steps now to deliver guided retirement solutions aimed at helping savers make the right choices. In the podcast, Nike Trost, the FCA’s Head of Department - Asset Management and Pensions Policy, and Patrick Coyne, Interim Director of Pensions Reform at TPR, say the industry needs to develop a much deeper understanding of the diverse needs and profiles within their scheme membership to ensure savers make the right decisions at retirement. They call on the industry to innovate in the design and delivery of retirement income solutions tailored to different saver types. And they discuss how the FCA’s Targeted Support proposals – designed to allow firms to make specific recommendations for groups or cohorts of consumers around pensions and investments – and the Pension Schemes Bill plans for guided retirement solutions are "complimentary policies". The Government has announced plans to bring back the Pensions Commission (the body that introduced auto-enrolment) in an effort to close the widening gap in pension savings and create stronger, more sustainable pensions outcomes for UK savers. Railpen supports the Government’s focus on pensions adequacy and its decision to revive the Pensions Commission to deliver effective reforms that will boost returns for savers and deliver economic growth.
