If you want to persuade and influence your audiences when you present. Try this kind of wording. Words matter and how we position our content can have a huge impact on our audiences and whether they ‘buy in’ to what we’re saying or not. There was some great research conducted by a number of researchers in the US on words and framing a while back that I’ve just heard about…. What the researchers did, is they went to a group of test subjects and said: "Imagine you have an awful disease, we have a potential cure, it’s got a 67% failure rate. Would you like to take it?" They had another group of people (who were similar in demographics etc), and said:  "Imagine you have an awful disease; we have a potential cure. It has a 33% success rate. Would you like to take it? If we think about it, they’ve said the same thing. But the focus is different – one is on failure; the other is on success. And I imagine you’ve already guessed the results… the group that heard about the “33% success rate” was more likely to take the treatment. That’s the power of framing. This is what’s called a “gain frame” and it’s a way to reframe your message so people aim for gain and not loss. And why is this helpful when you’re crafting your key messages for a business presentation? Because when you pitch a strategy, or you’re implementing change, or a new approach, audience perception hinges on the language you use. So how to use this in your next presentation? There’s nothing wrong with starting with a problem that needs a solution in our Introduction - that sets the scene. But we want to follow that by letting the audience know we have the solution… and talk about what the audience will get… the ultimate benefit. This is what I call a Positive Future Focus. Frame it as a positive gain… For instance: “When you/we implement X …” ‘you/we’ll save time’ resources” etc ‘receive X’ ‘save money’ ‘this will streamline the process, make it easier, quicker’ etc This gets the audience leaning in because there’s something in it for them… it prompts action, not resistance. So, instead of saying: “We must reduce risk and avoid cost.” Try this: “This will boost productivity, cut costs, and enhance our reputation.” (Of course, this will all be dependent on who’s in your audience and what their ultimate, preferred outcome is from your presentation.) To wrap this up… as I’ve mentioned, a gain frame is a persuasive way to influence our audiences and position our messaging, so we get their 'buy in'. Here’s the bit you might not have considered when you become a professional speaker Professional speaking is a business and when you start any business you’re excited, full of optimism and all the possibilities your new life will bring and so it’s tempting to believe you’ll be profitable from day one. Unfortunately, the reality is a bit different, it takes time. In the first months, you’ll probably be: - Investing in your learning - Creating materials and assets - Building your website and positioning - Making a showreel or video content - Setting up systems and processes (these don’t stop, you’ll keep investing in these as your business grows) This is the foundation phase and you may find yourself eating into your savings to make it happen, but it’s what makes profit possible later. I’ve seen too many speakers start with no financial cushion, max out their credit cards, and then feel pressured to succeed immediately. That pressure doesn't usually lead to good decisions. Don't do it. If you can, give yourself six months of living expenses in the bank before you start, or build speaking as a side hustle (sorry I’ve gone American again) while keeping another income stream. It’s far less stressful, and it gives you space to think and be strategic. Give yourself the best possible chance of turning those first steps into long-term success. And whatever business you’re in 6 months living expenses should be your minimum – put money aside for a raining day. Goodness knows we are getting more and more of those these days – and no I’m not talking about climate change. Safeguarding is everyone’s business. It’s not just a policy. It’s not just a procedure. And it’s definitely not just a box to tick. Because here’s the truth , paperwork doesn’t keep children safe, people do. Effective safeguarding starts with really understanding the child, recognising the strengths and struggles of their carer, and being curious about the context they’re living and growing in. Child, carer, context. One without the other tells us very little. All three together help us respond with care rather than just react with compliance. It still takes a village to raise a child, it also takes a community to keep them safe. 🎯That community includes the teacher who notices a child going quiet. 🎯The receptionist who spots the change in a parent’s tone. 🎯The social worker who sees beyond behaviour to what’s beneath it. Safeguarding isn’t just about passing on concerns. It’s about holding the child, carer and context in mind in every conversation, every plan, every policy. 🫶🏻Yes, we need rigour, but we also need relational intelligence. 🫶🏻Forms might flag a risk, but it’s people who follow up. 🫶🏻It’s relationships that open doors. 🫶🏻It’s culture that creates safety. And that culture is built by all of us not just the safeguarding lead. At L30 Relational Systems we often say it’s not enough to focus on what we have to count. We must also stay close to what counts to children and families. Safety, trust, and the sense that someone really sees them. So here’s a reminder as we plan ahead: ✅ Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. ✅ Culture is a safeguarding strategy. ✅ It’s not just about compliance. It’s about compassion. When we centre the child, understand the carer, and take time to know the context, we create the conditions for children not just to be protected but to flourish. So, last week I was lucky enough to spend an afternoon with Alex Partridge talking about the intersection between ADHD and Emotionally unstable or borderline personality disorder (EUPD) for his ADHD chatter podcast. I really enjoy talking to Alex because he's very knowledgeable, kind and curious. But it was one of the more difficult interviews I've given. It's not because I'm short of information or experience on the topic. and it's not because I'm not passionate about improving mental health through education and awareness. That's why I founded ADHDEd. No, the reason I found the interview hard was because there aren't lots of easy answers. I'd spent time discussing the topic with colleagues and reaching out on linked in and what came back was very clear in terms of diagnosis rates: 77% of you said yes, we have been diagnosing EUPD where we should have diagnosed neurodiversity and 23% were not sure, but no one said no, we were not picking up enough EUPD. Thanks to Dr Hannah Nearney, Sarah Turner, Helen Brice, Rosie Elvin, Dr Maria Daves, Matt Gupwell, Mind-Reframed: DBT, MBT and Psychological Services (London, UK and Online) Dr Claire Hepworth Clinical and Coaching Psychologist HCPC, BABCP, and Dr Jonathan Garabette for your input to this conversation. So, clinician feedback suggests we're missing out on neurodiversity, but what does that mean in terms of treatment? Well, it would be good to see a lot more people diagnosed with EUPD having their diagnosis reviewed from a neurodiversity lens. It would also be good to see those with ADHD being offered the effective pharmacological treatments we know can help with ADHD, and the reasonable adjustments that might support them at work or in education. But it would also be good to see some of the therapeutic approaches to EUPD more widely adopted in the ADHD world- it may be controversial because EUPD is so stigmatised but DBT informed therapies do have some evidence base in ADHD and may be a lot better than CBT. In particular group based skills training with a mindfulness component is likely to be helpful. However, the bigger issue than all of this is that there is a lack of decent service provision for a stigmatised group of people with significant mental health struggles. We lack highly trained neurodiversity assessors, we don't have a combined ADHD/ASD assessment protocol yet, we lack good group based psychotherapy approaches and the waiting list for an ADHD assessment for adults is up to 23 years in some parts of the UK. All the education in the world isn't going to fill the gap where all these skilled clinicians and services should be. And as a responsible educator I can't tell people it's straightforward- just pop along and see your GP. So that's what I found hard, despite my enthusiasm for the subject. #ADHD #psychology #therapy #DBT

There has been a rise in men branding themselves as OnlyFans managers. On the surface this may appear to be entrepreneurial activity. However, the reality is that many of these so-called managers are operating as online pimps, taking control of accounts, coercing or manipulating women into producing content, and profiting directly from their exploitation. This practice is not innovation or business development. It is exploitation. In the UK, pimping is illegal, whether it happens on the street or through a digital platform. What often gets overlooked is that exploitation does not vanish when it shifts online. It adapts. The power dynamics, coercion and financial abuse remain, but they are disguised behind the language of “management” or “digital services.” This creates a dangerous grey area where predatory behaviour can thrive under the guise of legitimate support. Safeguarding must extend to digital economies. We need to strengthen awareness of these practices, ensure accountability for those profiting from coercion, and provide accessible support pathways for individuals who may be at risk. Exploitation in online spaces is no less harmful than in offline ones. 3 people lost me as a client because they led with a shiny PDF, and none of them realised that was the problem🤯... I put a call out for local content creators for a private event I’m hosting, and within hours, I had 4 beautifully designed service guides in my inbox. No real questions, just pre-set packages, prices and bullet points outlining services I hadn’t even asked for. A couple said “Tell me more about the event,” which was nice… But no one asked: → What kind of support I needed → What outcome I was hoping for → What vibe I wanted to create It all felt… generic, like I was getting shoehorned into a package they already had. So I didn’t choose any of them. I actually went with someone who cost more, but made me feel like the offer was tailored to what I actually needed. Here’s the lesson: Your first impression isn’t your logo, and it’s definitely not your polished PDF. It’s: → The conversation you start → The way you listen → The smart questions you ask → The way you tailor your service based on what the client actually tells you If you’re leading with a PDF, but struggling to convert, this might be why. ❌ Not because your prices are too high. ❌ Not because you're not experienced. But because your sales process is skipping the connection part. Getting money into your business starts with connections and conversations. It’s the one that turns browsers into buyers.
