📢 Marks and Spencer appoints a new CPO Marks & Spencer has appointed former Asda executive Hayley Tatum MBE, as its new Chief People Officer. Tatum will join the executive committee in October and begin her induction working alongside M&S colleagues in stores and distribution centres. Tatum brings a wealth of retail experience, having spent 14 years at Asda in senior people leadership roles and over two decades at Tesco in operational and HR positions. CEO Stuart Machin praised her hands-on, collaborative approach, noting her track record in building strong colleague engagement. Here are some interesting stories from the world of UK retail for Monday, 25 August: 👗 Rachel Morgans of John Lewis & Partners is aiming to inspire customers and enhance the store's appeal as a fashion destination. She has introduced over 50 new brands and sales have risen by 3% year on year. 🛍️ Plastic bag sales in the UK have increased for the first time in a decade, reaching 437m bags last year, a 7% rise from 407m in 2021. This increase is attributed to the growth of online shopping. 🚔 The Scottish Retail Consortium has highlighted a troubling increase in abuse against retail workers. Police Scotland reported 1,238 common assaults on retail staff this year, up 6.7% from last year. 🍽️ Alex Reilley, chairman of Loungers, has resigned from the Hospitality Sector Council after facing pressure for criticising Labour's tax policies. A government spokesman noted that Reilley's departure was mutually agreed. 💷 A poll from Citi and YouGov shows that the public expect short-term inflation to come in at 4%, with this unchanged from a previous survey.
