The publication of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero's Clean Flexibility Roadmap last week, which details how the UK will deliver up to 66GW of clean flexible capacity by 2030, was an important milestone in the journey to clean #power in the UK. And in the roadmap, our innovative long duration energy storage (LDES) solution was highlighted as a key enabler of grid #flexibility, as well as its ability to store excess #renewable energy. It also emphasised the critical role of LDES solutions, like our liquid air technology, in managing peaks and troughs in demand and reducing reliance on fossil fuel power plants. As more variable renewables connect to the grid coupled with increased demand from transport, balancing supply and demand becomes harder. NESO’s Future Energy Scenarios 2025 Report (National Energy System Operator) shows that meeting the UK’s net zero targets will require large amounts of flexibility on both the supply and demand side. 𝘒𝘦𝘺 𝘧𝘭𝘦𝘹 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘳𝘪𝘥 𝘌𝘚𝘖’𝘴 𝘍𝘌𝘚 2025 In NESO’s Holistic Transition scenario they’re now predicting up to 40GW of utility scale battery storage by 2050, up 4GW from their 2024 projections. (📊 Slide 2) Their forecast for V2G flex has increased by 28% to 41GW. (📊 Slide 3) Taking into account all sources of flex, according to NESO’s latest report almost 50% of the total system flexibility will come from residential and commercial consumers. (📊 Slide 4) While flex is vital, not all flex is equal. If assets are controlled by overly simplistic Energy Management Systems or not exposed to dynamic tariffs or markets, then those assets aren’t creating as much value for the energy system (and in turn the asset owner) as they could be. To see what that looks like in practice we modelled a real site using Gridcog: a London supermarket with solar PV, battery storage, EV chargers and flexible refrigeration. 𝘞𝘦 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘸𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴: 1️⃣ Baseline – battery in self-consumption mode, EVs charging at full power on return, site on standard retail supply and network tariffs 2️⃣ Smart optimisation – battery co-optimised and EV fleet smart charging in response to retail and network price signals 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 ➡️ Maximum onsite demand fell from almost 400 kW in the baseline to around 67 kW under smart control (📊 Slide 5) ➡️ This shift reduced grid connection needs by 300 kW, improving cost efficiency and resource use ➡️ Demand shifted to off-peak periods, concentrating consumption overnight when retail and network costs are lower ➡️ Smarter asset control delivered nearly 10% savings in annual energy costs for the site (📊 Slide 6) Even without participation in energy markets, co-optimising the battery and EV fleet dramatically improved the site’s financial and operational performance.
