Alex’s vision has continued through his employees, who have been with the company since day one and continue to keep his legacy of technical excellence alive. BBC Three is inviting Indies to pitch Current Affairs Docs for YouTube and BBC iPlayer 🎬 The new commissioning opportunity was confirmed this week at the Edinburgh TV Festival - Supported by Screen Scotland 2025 “We are looking for a maximum of five stand out films from five different Indies that uncover arresting characters, voices or perspectives that will resonate amongst 16-34’s in the UK,” says Fiona Campbell, Controller, Youth Audience, BBC iPlayer and BBC Three. “We want Indies to come to us with ideas that explore a riveting world, tell a gripping story, or show confronting perspectives that reflect issues facing young Brits today.” It’s part of our ongoing commitment to younger audiences. USW and Sound Progression – a youth music development organisation – have launched a strategic partnership focused on nurturing emerging music talent, creating meaningful opportunities for young creatives, and strengthening the music industry in Wales. Based in Cardiff, Sound Progression is a leading organisation supporting children and young people aged 10 to 25, especially those from diverse and socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Through participant-led music projects and training delivered in community studios, Sound Progression promotes creative expression, empowerment, and confidence building for aspiring singers, songwriters, producers, and sound engineers. The Ed Sheeran Foundation awarded a significant multi-year grant to Sound Progression in January 2025, providing financial stability and enabling growth for the youth music charity. Their partnership with USW forms a key part of this ongoing growth strategy. Carole Blade, Company Manager at Sound Progression, said: “This partnership is a vital step towards creating sustainable pathways for young artists in Wales. Working closely with USW allows us to enhance opportunities for our participants and strengthen the local music sector.” Lucy Squire, Head of Music and Drama at USW, added: “Our collaboration with Sound Progression embodies our commitment to connect education, creativity, and community. Together, we are fostering an inclusive environment where emerging talent can thrive and contribute to Wales’ cultural and economic future.” The partnership will be launched with a free live music showcase at the USW Students’ Union, Cardiff campus, on Thursday 9 October from 5pm. Culture Minister Ian Murray carried out his first official visit since being appointed, opening Pinewood Studios’ new Independent  Indie Film Hub. The hub will provide sound stages, production offices and workshop spaces to support independent filmmakers, backed by the Government’s new Independent Film Tax Credit. Minister Ian Murray said: “Pinewood's Independent  Indie Film Hub is a striking example of the innovation and investment that the Government is championing across the creative industries. This world-class facility gives independent filmmakers the tools they need to bring their visions to life, and it was a pleasure to open it today.” This builds on the Government’s wider £380 million Creative Industries Sector Plan, which is boosting local jobs, driving economic growth and ensuring the UK remains a world leader in creativity and culture
