Shopify just quietly made a change that could tank your conversion rate. They moved the “Add to Cart” event to fire from the server instead of the browser. If you’re relying on tools like GA4, Meta Pixel, or any CRO platform to track how users are adding to cart… you might be flying blind. We caught this during a client audit. Conversions looked flat, but revenue and average order value were up. Turns out, the funnel was working, only the tracking was broken. It took us 30 minutes to fix. But without that fix, the data would’ve pointed us in the wrong direction. Here’s what’s happening: Shopify is starting to shift key events like “add_to_cart” to fire server-side—meaning directly from Shopify’s backend instead of your customer’s browser. That’s great for data integrity. It’s bad if your tools still expect those events to come from the browser. Browser-based pixels can’t see what’s happening unless you rewire the setup or bridge the signals using something like server-side GTM, a proxy, or Meta’s Conversions API. If you’re on a custom theme, running headless, or using older tracking scripts, you could be underreporting everything from cart activity to A/B test wins. If I joined a B2B SaaS marketing department today, here’s what my next 3 months would look like (without upsetting anyone). Month 1: Ad Platform Audits Day 1 - dive straight into performance marketing channels. Context is rarely needed to audit Google / Bing / LinkedIn Ads. There’s something to be said about audits without ‘this is why we did this’. In one activity you can: - remove wasted spend - understand the company’s offers (and it's evolution) - get a sense of their marketing literacy You have two options: build on the accounts, or burn down and start from scratch. Either way, this should be completed in Month 1. Next, Understand the product-market fit Now you've got that dopamine hit of some early wins, it’s time to enter the messy world of product and market orientation. This includes: - Internal demos - Company reviews (creating a sentiment analysis using GPT) - Listening to customer interviews (condensed using GPT) - Crawling Reddit / Twitter (manual & deep research GPT) - Looking at competitor sites / ad libraries and search market share (added to NotebookLM) - Reviewing HubSpot data and conversations (using HubSpot’s native GPT integration) Add all of the above, along with the brand guidelines and ToV document, to a dedicated NotebookLM for later. Month 2: Go through the site and see what assets can be repurposed into LinkedIn Ads: - Testimonials - Case Studies - Product Use Cases / Thought Leadership Start ideating copy and design for Product Ads. Next: - Create a blended report which shows the highest-converting Paid Search queries against the organic opportunity - Technical audit the site but focus on high-impact areas & ensure you content audit every single URL - each page must provide some of value - Optimise key product pages, optimise internal link structures and ideate a digital PR / link-building strategy to maximise visibility in LLMs and natural search Next, we build out real-time reporting dashboards for all marketing activity, pipeline, and closed-won revenue. Month 3: All activity from the previous month is set in motion. Now, we write 5x video scripts: - 1x ‘Hero Product’ video (showcasing the value prop to cold audiences) - 2x ‘Product Loop’ videos (walkthroughs of features that users find most valuable) - 2x vertical ‘Social Proof’ videos (either from clients or case study run-throughs). Anyone who watches over 50% of these videos on LinkedIn will get an automated ‘Conversational Ad’ from sales. Now - it’s time. We’ve got a few months of data and some cool assets - we book an internal Marketing and Sales meeting to go through the master plan. Trust me, sales will be excited.
