This week, our Supply Chain & Commercial Director Daniel McAteer joined a panel at Energy Voice Live in Hull and recorded a podcast episode exploring the future of energy through the lens of our three molecule strategy.   The discussions spotlighted the Humber and East Coast’s potential to lead the UK’s net zero transition. Dan outlined how hydrogen blending, a core hydrogen network and continued development of carbon capture infrastructure are central to our regional delivery approach, demonstrating how National Gas can support government in achieving its clean power goals while positioning Britain as a global leader in clean technologies.   Importantly, it was discussed that with the right policy signals, we could unlock billions in private investment, accelerate infrastructure delivery, and kickstart the UK’s hydrogen economy. First Hydrogen Blended into the UK's Gas Grid: A Reality Check Today, UK gas operator National Gas made headlines by blending 2% green hydrogen into the national gas grid, using the blend to generate electricity at Brigg power station. While the trial has been billed as a "landmark" moment in decarbonising energy infrastructure, the facts tell a more nuanced story. 🔍 Claim: Hydrogen blending can decarbonise critical energy infrastructure. ▪️ Fact: Blending 2% hydrogen reduces emissions by <0.7%. This is due to hydrogen's lower energy density by volume compared to methane, the main component of natural gas. ▪️ Fact: Studies show existing gas pipelines can carry a maximum 20% mix of hydrogen before requiring expensive infrastructure retrofits, capping maximum emission savings at just 7% - a negligible contribution to decarbonisation. ▪️ Fact: Blending hydrogen involves technical challenges and limitations at every stage of the gas system, detailed in a peer-reviewed study by HSC members: https://lnkd.in/eJqRKhRY 🔍 Claim: Hydrogen blending could help lower energy bills. ▪️ Fact: Blending hydrogen into the gas grid will increase costs for consumers, as clean hydrogen is expensive to produce and delivers less energy per unit volume. ▪️ Fact: Blending 20% hydrogen into the gas grid would increase costs by up to 43%, according to a 2022 study by the Fraunhofer Institute. ▪️ Fact: Analysts project green hydrogen prices will remain stubbornly high for decades. 🔍 Claim: Hydrogen blending will boost the hydrogen economy. ▪️ Fact: Hydrogen blending risks distorting the early clean hydrogen market by encouraging inefficient, high-subsidy projects and crowding out other essential end uses of hydrogen. ▪️ Fact: There is already significant demand for clean hydrogen where hydrogen made from unabated fossil fuels is used today: making ammonia for fertiliser, chemical processing, and possibly producing steel in the future. Our conclusion: Though technically possible, blending hydrogen into the gas grid is incompatible with an evidence-based hydrogen strategy. Uniper to explore potential UK hydrogen storage development, in partnership with British Salt. We have an exciting new project to share; the Salinae Hydrogen Storage project. Hydrogen is a key fuel for industries that are difficult to electrify, such as chemicals and refining, steelmaking, cement production, and transport. We’re developing a hydrogen portfolio with the aim of a long-term transition, and as part of this, we’re exploring the potential for hydrogen storage with a number of projects, in the UK and Germany. The Salinae Hydrogen Storage project is a potential salt cavern hydrogen storage facility, near Warmingham in Cheshire. We’re working on the project in partnership with British Salt who own the mineral rights and have existing operations on the site. The two companies have recently signed a feasibility development agreement which gives Uniper the sole rights to explore the site’s potential for hydrogen storage. Along with existing gas storage, this project has the potential to play a key role in ensuring a secure and flexible energy system in the UK. #SecurityOfSupply #NetZero #EnergyTransition #Hydrogen
