SSE Renewables has secured consent from the Scottish Government for the 4.1GW Berwick Bank offshore wind project in the North Sea. The utility gained a Section 36 consent determination yesterday, which SSE said is the last major consent it needs to proceed. SSE said the project could inject £8.3bn into the UK economy and create more than 9,300 jobs of which 4,650 are in Scotland. The company is now looking to secure support from the UK Government under the Contracts for Difference (CfD) regime, and take a final investment decision. Stephen Wheeler, managing director at SSE Renewables, said: "At over 4GW of potential capacity, Berwick Bank can play a pivotal role in meeting the mission of Clean Power 2030 for the UK and achieving Scotland’s decarbonisation and climate action goals. As the UK’s clean energy champion, SSE now looks forward to the UK Government delivering the most ambitious CfD scheme yet through the upcoming AR7 auction round." Thames Water has revealed its forthcoming procurement for a significant new Major Projects Framework, aimed at delivering critical infrastructure upgrades and capital works across its operational regions. Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) Launch Event is on 18th September. The announcement follows a successful preliminary market engagement phase, during which suppliers were invited to help shape the procurement strategy for the ambitious programme. The Major Projects Framework will cover a wide range of essential works, goods, and services to support Thames Water’s Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) and into AMP9, possibly to its conclusion, contingent on performance. The estimated total value of the framework is £1bn This long-term framework is designed not only to deliver major construction and asset enhancement projects but also to foster sustainable partnerships with suppliers by reducing repetitive bidding efforts. Thames Water emphasises the move towards collaboration and efficiency in delivering value to customers and stakeholders alike. To formally launch the tender process, Thames Water will host an Invitation to Negotiate (ITN) Launch Event on 18th September. The event will provide a comprehensive overview of the opportunity, including insights from the preliminary market engagement findings, details of the procurement process, contract specifics, and evaluation criteria. It will serve as a crucial platform for potential Tier 1 main contractors – whether bidding as sole contractors, joint ventures, or consortia – to clarify requirements and questions ahead of submission deadlines. Suppliers interested in bidding are advised to attend the event to ensure they are fully briefed and to encourage early collaboration should they intend to bid as part of a joint venture or consortium. Thames Water recommends that any consortium arrangements be finalised before the pre-qualification questionnaire response deadline to facilitate a smooth submission process. The contract is slated to commence on 30 March 2026 and run through to 30 March 2033, with the possibility of an extension to 18 July 2035, based on performance metrics. This timeline reflects Thames Water’s commitment to securing a reliable and high-performing delivery partner to support the company’s long-term infrastructure plans.
