Abertay gave me a solid grounding in software development, especially in real-time systems and object-oriented programming with C++ and C#. A lot of what I learned there has stuck with me and continues to shape how I approach problems today.

A standout moment from my time there was a professional project in collaboration with Microsoft, where I led development on an AR/VR application. We submitted it to the Microsoft Imagine Cup, and the experience gave me a deep dive into emerging tech, rapid prototyping, and pitching ideas to different audiences. It was also my first real exposure to agile development—daily scrum, sprint planning, and adapting to fast-moving challenges—which has been a huge asset in my career.

Alongside the technical side, the course put a big focus on teamwork and collaboration, which helped me get comfortable working in cross-functional groups and communicating ideas clearly—skills that have been just as important as the code itself in my day-to-day work.

I began attending Andy's Man Club during a particularly difficult chapter in my life, feeling isolated and unable to connect with others about the challenges I was facing. Thanks to the support of the group, I’ve been able to overcome those struggles and have found myself in a better place, knowing that when challenges do arise, I have the support network I need to weather the storm. Motivated by the impact it had on me, I wanted to give back and ensure that this vital support network is available for other men who are going through tough times.

As a facilitator, I help run the meetings, welcome new members, and coordinate and help out with social, awareness, and fundraising events. My role is both rewarding and humbling, allowing me to connect with others in a meaningful way while providing a space where they can feel heard and supported.

Volunteering at Andy’s Man Club has helped me develop important skills, particularly in listening and empathy. It has allowed me to develop skills to better understand others—not just the words, but the meaning behind them. This has translated into stronger relationships, both personally and professionally. I’ve gained more confidence in sharing my own story and being authentic, and I’ve built friendships that will last a lifetime.

One of the achievements I’m most proud of was participating in a Couch to 5K program with a group of the guys. It was a challenge for me personally, as I’d fallen out of shape, and when you’re struggling with mental health, prioritizing your well-being can be tough. But through teamwork and mutual support, we pushed ourselves to complete the program, and I continue to run with many of the guys to this day. The transformation I’ve seen in myself and others during this journey has been fulfilling to say the least.

I’m incredibly grateful for the growth, friendship, and support that Andy’s Man Club has provided, and I’m excited to continue being part of this amazing community.
