    Education

My interest in making a difference to the community led me to volunteer with Reachout in 2013 to teach young and disadvantaged children. Along with a team of tutors, I helped in enhancing their learning techniques and thereby their academic performance. Through group activities and sports, we taught them the importance of teamwork and leadership.

  • Power flow analysis using PowerWorld: A comprehensive testing report

IEEE Conference Publications - Fluid Power and Mechatronics (FPM), 2015 International Conference

The research documented in this paper investigates the underlying attributes, mechanisms, advantages and disadvantages of long-distance power transmission by analysing a set of case studies based on a simple simulated system created in the PowerWorld software package. In particular, the factors that have an impact on a series of power flow variables, including active power, reactive power, magnitude and phase of voltages, will be tested and analysed. The results from this will then be compared…

In particular, the factors that have an impact on a series of power flow variables, including active power, reactive power, magnitude and phase of voltages, will be tested and analysed. The results from this will then be compared to the simulations produced by PowerWorld. The paper intends to give readers an understanding of the PowerWorld package and its many advantages, specifically in the analysis of power flow dynamics.

  • Segmented power demand forecasting using stochastic model

IEEE Conference Publications - Fluid Power and Mechatronics (FPM), 2015 International Conference

This paper is based on the research of a new method to forecast power demand. Conventionally, researchers have extracted the implicit periodicity contained in the long-term power demand curve. In contrast, we have divided the long-term power demand curve into a large number of small segments and treated the power demand in each segment as a random variable without memory. Thus, by using the stochastic model and the adaptive mechanism, we can now update the relevant statistic parameters to…

Thus, by using the stochastic model and the adaptive mechanism, we can now update the relevant statistic parameters to provide an accurate forecasting result. Simulations run using this method provide an accurate approximation of the real power demand, requiring only a small amount of real-time information. This effectively reduces the operational overheads of smart grid-based power demand forecasting. The only negative effect is a negligible loss in accuracy, well under the acceptable standards. Admittedly, it is not the most accurate method to forecasting power demand, but its low system complexity outperforms over other methods.

Two of my teammates and I designed a solar powered water purification system that we exhibited in the 2011 Shastrosav Science Exhibition held at Gulf University of Science and Technology, Kuwait. The system was acknowledged by the prestigious judges to be an innovative and cost effective design. The design combined gravitational force and solar power to increase cost efficiency and productivity of the system. This project taught me the importance of organising the right team and managing it effectively, to find innovative solutions to challenges. I also learnt how to use technology more efficiently to improve its commercial and domestically viability, a skill which is becoming increasingly important in today’s fast and vastly changing world.

    • Led a team of five to build a line-following automated robot ‘buggy’
    • As the project manager, I ensured that we work efficiently by identifying the strengths within the team and through my organisational ability I was able to leverage these skills
    • Pitched the buggy’s proposal to a panel of judges as the leader in the group presentation
    • Firm and wise decisions on crucial times guaranteed success that was proven by an overall score of 74%
