"CRO" used to be thought of as one of three tactical marketing revenue drivers, alongside PPC and SEO. Whilst A/B testing generally does not fall within marketing anymore, the same underlying problem still plagues practitioners, which is that it is seen as a tactical revenue driver. It's seen as a P&L line item whereby you spend some money (on people and tools) and get something back. This might feel like it makes sense, but it really doesn't. Experimentation does not, in and of itself, make any money. It just helps you make a better decision about something else which does make money. If you run an A/B test on a landing page and it works, you will then push that to production, and therefore it was the production change that made the money. The A/B test was a form of research that helped you decide to do that.
