We’ve written to Uber Eats, Just Eat and Deliveroo asking them to share important safety advice with their riders after data showed a rise in e-bike fires in London this year. We recently announced that we have attended around 165 e-bike and e-scooter fires in 2025, including 134 e-bike fires which is an average of around 18 e-bike or e-scooter fires a month. If this trend continues for the rest of the year, London will surpass 200 incidents in a single year for the first time. Although we are attending fires affecting a wide range of people, including families and students, we believe gig economy companies in particular should be using their platforms to do more to raise awareness about the fire risks presented by e-bikes with their riders. Assistant Commissioner Pamela Oparaocha said: “Everything possible must be done to help people understand the risks we know exist and the steps they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe. "We’ve been pleased to work with organisations such as London Trading Standards and Deliveroo to share advice directly to e-bike riders. But the number of fires we’re seeing demonstrate the dangers people are exposing themselves and others to when it comes to their e-bikes in particular.” The fires often occur when the lithium batteries that power e-bikes and e-scooters fail and explode. Batteries can fail for a number of reasons - such as if they have been built poorly, are fake or damaged, overcharged or the incorrect charger is used.  Products, such as batteries, chargers and e-bike conversion kits, that are purchased from online marketplaces are at greater risk of malfunctioning because they have not been subject to the same level of regulation as high-street shops. The BBC Research & Development Department and Sony are collaborating on a hugely significant step in ensuring the trustworthiness of content in the current digital landscape 🤝 As part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA), we are working to establish robust workflows for verifying the authenticity of digital content. One of the world’s first use cases of testing a C2PA workflow with video content has been prepared using Sony’s newly launched #PXWZ300. This is the world´s first camcorder to embed digital signatures into video files, supporting the C2PA standard. As part of the IBC Accelerator project, the BBC used a PXW-Z300 to shoot a video to demonstrate how users can verify the authenticity of video content using devices that support C2PA. By checking the content credentials, users can see whether a video was captured by a real camera, who published it, and if it has been manipulated. Channel 4 Sales is expanding its advertising emissions measurement offering! Our commercial team will now be able to provide advertisers with emissions data for their campaigns running on linear TV, after it first introduced the capability for digital campaigns on Channel 4's owned and operated platforms earlier this year.
